Although I suspect Jon has figured out it is a good way to see what fans are thinking,care about and don't and what songs are important to them and what ones are not.

I definitely give Jon credit for trying it, because we know from the documentary that he didn't want to. No doubt, it's a great way to keep in touch with the buying public, and it would be silly to totally ignore it in this day and age.
I follow a number of recording artists on Twitter and Facebook, and some obviously have "people" to do that, but its still good information. Others (some young, and some not so young) really seem to enjoy it and are posting comments, pics, etc. constantly. They're the ones who are really fun to follow!
