I always read the california line as being where all the shit's going down for Richie, so it's time to get him out of the funk and onto the road. I don't think it's a big reach to read that song as from Jon to Richie without any non-attendance subtext to be honest, at the time anyway. He used to talk about how Jon helped him get himself back on track around that time.

I remember watching the official video for this for the first time of this and thinking, did Richie die? It's clearly all about him...his dad, Heather, custody battle, booze. The video though is black and white JBJ alone in a hotel room with slow fading pics of Richie in the background. It feels like your watching a "in memory of Richie Sambora" video...
Perhaps Jon keeps it in the set because he misses his right hand man and can't believe it's come to this. Or he keeps it because he can.
