What's wrong with what you call "open air spaces"?
They played Parc Jean Drapeau in Montreal because there is no big enough stadium in Montreal for a summer gig for band like BJ. There is the Olympic Stadium, it's huge, but it's covered, it's expensive and the sound sucks big time.
Parc Jean Drapeau is a very cool venue for summer concerts.
