There's a great programme called Audacity which is also free, it's excellent for a load of stuff like recording from Youtube, splitting etc. will let you fade down the end of the track you've split, fade up etc. Just google audacity and you'll get it from download.com or that.

Thanking you. My challenge will be to split into tracks and still get lossless playback. My old iPod had no problem, my Creative not so much.Thank goodness a new iPod is coming for my birthday soon from my wife and little boy.
