I think what did it for me was seeing that article with Jon saying how he hates touring, then seeing these slap-in-the-face ticket prices.
I'll give you an analogy, granted, not apples to apples, but an analogy nevertheless:
My 2 favorite groups: Bon Jovi & The Goo Goo Dolls
Bon Jovi, granted have just been playing one-off gigs so far, but the setlists have been the same old same old, and they're charging all but unaffordable amounts of money for tickets.
Goo Goo Dolls - Going to see them in July with Lifehouse. The tickets were $25 each, and the Goos are GUARENTEEING a different set list every night and allowing the fans to vote on the songs they play on their website.

Well, the high end price may well turn out to be for the floor seats. But, if these shows don't sell out the prices will drop. To me the set list is not the end all be all to a show and I actually think for these promo shows that the set lists aren't too bad. The new songs make up for some of the songs that need to go like Sleep When I'm Dead.
As far as Jon's quote about touring. Did you read the entire thing (this is a translation from the article):
You have now all a family, a life fully luxury. Are you still up to go on tour and live out of a suitcase?
"I hate it. Until I am arrived in the first hotel. They must drag me my house out: with my nails over the the drive way and the limo in to the airport. once i am granted that we must tour again, i ease myself, and i even enjoy it again, but until that time… I (curses) hate it! The Eric Claptons and Elvis Coxtello’s of this world live to tour. Springsteen, another one, he loves it. I found the life was on the road perhaps nicely when i was twenty and had to no house to go to. Now I have other priorities."
Plus, Jon's been saying this I want to say since the TD tour.
I do think it's cool the Goos are having fans decide the set list. However, I will say, they needed to do something. Their shows on the last leg of their tour were averaging around 80 minutes and they were playing to much smaller audiences.
I'm in a very different position than you when it comes to disposable income as I'm single and don't have a family to consider. I can afford to pay more for things like concert tickets. And again for me, I'll take the cheap seats versus not being there at all but that's easy for me to say because I live 40 minutes away and don't have to consider any other expenses.
I'm really hoping that this price structure won't be indicative of the tour, but we shall see.
