it's meant to stand for emotional rock i think...kind of like 'oh woe is me my girlfriend dumped me, so i will write a song about how i want to top myself over it'.

....however i think 'Teenagers' by MCR is fantastic, and i think it's more glam rock than emo (just as long as you ignore the lyrics). Also 'I'm Not Ok' from their first album is a great rocking tune. And the (i would call it) power ballad they released earlier on in this year 'I Don't Love you' was also brilliant. and if liking it makes me emo? well then my mum is emo too....and she really is not emo lol

...i however don't know what any of the albums or live performances are like. But i would have to say this is a million times better than a band like Goldspot

*Puts on Encyclopedia Rock-tannica hat*

The term "emo" actually refers to "emotional hardcore" ... although recently that seems to have shifted a bit. Very basically, emo could be described as "emotional punk" or "emotional pop-punk". In general I think the whole emo 'scene' is a bit of a lazy stereotype (the fashion is just really a mixture of mallgoth and indie hipster), but I'll use the general music genre classification just for clarity.

Don't I sound intelligent?

I reckon that to dismiss MCR based on a label of their genre is lazy, especially when they also heavily incorporate elements of glam rock and arena rock into the mix. Feel free to dislike them if you genuinely don't like their music or don't like them live, but this whole concept of disliking entire genres irritates me

My best friend does it all the time, drives me nuts!

I just spent a good part of last night listening to their music - not just casually but seriously. My conclusion is that I love the music but I could do without the negativity. I'll be happy to see them and see how well they do in a live setting.

I'm really not an MCR fan, but not because of their genre. The music just doesn't do anything for me. The band as a whole has definate chops musically, but I just can't get into them.I do still wish I was seeing them open instead of Big N' Rich, but as Long as I get a Bon Jovi/All-American Reject bill on the 10, I can deal with B+R for one night.

I don't understand how some of you are being so negative towards MCR. They are an amazing band but once someone labels them as emo they talk down on them. They are not emo. Dashboard Confessional are emo....these two bands sound nothing alike. MCR are more of a goth rock band who have great songs. I have seen them 4 times so far and can't wait to see them opening for Bon Jovi. Maybe before some of you talk so negative about them that maybe you should take the time to actually listen to them because if it were the other way around and people were stereotyping Bon Jovi without listening to them you'd be pissed. If you don't take the time to listen to MCR then don't take the time to talk about music you have no idea about.....thanx

Didn't know much about this band, so I went and listened to some of their stuff last night, have to say I'm glad these shows are not GA. I'll give them a shot to impress me live opening night but I suspect that I won't be rushing for my seat on night number two.
