I don't think the big venue tour will have to be shortened at all. I'd lay odds that one of the reasons behind this small venue thing is to help take up the downtime on the road. Unless they are playing multiple nights in one venue, arena shows are almost never back to back nights. there are always a day or two in between which leaves the band just hanging out somewhere, which Jon hates. It's one of his biggest complaints about being on tour, too much downtime and nothing to do.
The extra players come in here as well. Richie in particular likes to go home to his family between shows. With the extra players on tour, he could still do that some and the rest of them could play the small venue stuff. I really like this idea, but get ready for a wallet pinch, these shows will cost some bucks to go to.

Er, those days with no shows are there to preserve Jon's voice. As soon as he starts doing shows in a row he loses it completely.

There's no way the extra players could play his parts. Bobby can't even play a decent guitarsolo in Wanted. Do you actually understand the fact that Bon Jovi = those five guys together? Honestly think fans who pay to see this band in an intimate venue, are satisfied with the band minus Richie Sambora?

And I don't understand why people would think such a small show costs more money than a big one.

It's not that difficult. The band faces certain fixed costs like crew salary, insurance, stage, transportation etc.. They must pay most of these costs for every show, no matter the size (ok, a small stage requires different lightening maybe).
To make even or to make profit, revenue has to be made from the ticket sales. If the venue is small, you can sell less tickets so you have to make your profit based on a fewer amount of tickets. Hence, the ticket price goes up. If the costs can be divided by 30000 tickets, the price goes down.

it costs alot to put a tour on. it costs 20 grand a week for status quo to tour round tiny venues and community halls, imagine how much it costs to send a band over to europe from the US never mind a big one like BJ. you need to charge more to cover your overheads even when the actual venue and ticket printing costs less... basic economics really.

there's a couple of places they could do it here. the royal concert hall would be great, nice atmosphere, you can drink in it and the place is specifically designed for sonic use so the sound inside it is incredible.

wouldnt be too hard logistically either.

they go to city A, do the stadium as the intimate gig gets set up, stadium team moves onto next stadium, they do intimate gig next night, move onto stadium with a days rest, intimate venue moves onto next city for day after stadium again.... it'd really just be a case of getting a touring manager on each team.

bla bla bla. We all know that. Still bands like REM with a huge lighting set manages to do small venues charging half of what BJ charges at an arena type venue. In fact, tons of big named acts do it!

Jim: the cost for a stadium or arena is significantly more than that of a small theater. Bigger = more cost. From parking surcharge to security. Basic economics indeed! Hence, small venue does NOT equal big ticket price.

That's true Seb and that's one of the reasons I'm sceptical. Now don't jump all over me for saying this but I'm sure JBJ is well aware of that and that is why they space the tour out but perhaps (if true) this is a sign that Jon's voice is in better shape. I can't imagine he'd schedule concerts night after night if he was going to be up for it.

I don't mind Bobby and Jeff coming out with them but I couldn't see myself paying 250 euro to see the band minus Richie Sambora. Also if they are going to do rare stuff and solo stuff it would be a perfect opportunity for Richie to sing more then one song.

This would make a hell-of a double dvd.

I don't really understand why people are taking the 700 number so literally, it was probably used as a ball park figure. Some nights bmight be 1500, others might be 500.

In a big venue, you can sell more tickets.
Example:

Suppose a small venue costs half than a big venue.
Big venue: 10,000
Small venue : 5,000

Tickets in big venue: 1,000
Tickets in small venue: 200

(I know the figures aren't realistic)

Ticketprice big venue = 10000 / 1000 = 10
Ticketprice small venue = 5000 / 200 = 25

I really doubt the costs and size of a venue have a lineair connection. If you draw a graph, with venue size on the x-axis and price to do a show on the y-axis, my guess is the slope will decrease when you increment the venue size.

probably. But it doesn't mean that small venue equals no money for the artist and hence it isn't feasible.

Just like I believe that ticket prices of $90 are outrageous and do not represent the actual cost of a show (including an obvious profit). If other high profile bands can keep the cost down, I don't see why BJ can't do it either. If Bob Dylan/Pearl Jam/REM only charge $45 per ticket in a small venue, I don't see why BJ should charge $250/300. That's about the extent of my point

big venues have bigger overheads but they also bring in much much more ticket revenue.

smaller venues have smaller overheads but are still expensive to run thus they need to make the overheads and at least make it a worthwhile endeavour for all involved hence why the prices are so high.

the band are already on a set cut no matter what the door takes so its really the promoter covering his costs and getting his cut that jacks up the price. the only thing bands directly have to do with pricing at gigs is merch because they pay for it and all revenue goes back to them.
