If Dave were sick or had a family emergency, it would be different, and I'd be thinking he should take care of himself, by all means. I'd have understood this more easily if he missed shows when his father passed away. Instead, he will be at the Tony's and he might win, or he might not.

If he won, and that were announced to the crowd AT the concert, imagine the party atmosphere that would be instantly created. Talk about bringing down the house. He'd be surrounded by people who really were genuinely thrilled for him. On the other hand, if he wins and he is AT the Tony's, then he's surrounded by his competition who might be happy for him, but his co-nominees would possibly be feeling a bit of envy, you know? There's no way they'd be as excited for him as a crowd of Bon Jovi fans.

If he loses, then he's at the Tony's and gets nothing other than the nomination. He could have been at the Bon Jovi party living it up in spite of not getting the award.

I think if it were me, I'd be in London playing those keys for the fans who are there to have a good time! As others have said, acceptance speeches are often given by video via satellite.

1. The time difference would make that impossible.
2. I've never seen the winner of the Biggest award of the night do that.
3. This is Dave's thing, and he has a right to be selfish about it IMO.

Remember when Jon's team won the big championship for arena football and he was on tour? It's similar (but not exactly) the same kind of thing.

If Dave wins, then I'm very happy (and proud!) for him. I saw Memphis, and it really is a good show. I know it does not matter what I think I would do in the same situation, especially since I am not (and won't be). I can only speak to how I believe I would respond. Another alternative is to have the concert on a different date. I had concert tickets purchased before and have had the show rescheduled. I know it seems like a terrible thing (to some) -- but it's not as bad as it sounds if it is announced far enough ahead of time.

I'm just thinking out loud here. Of course he can make his own decision. I don't know if I would call it selfish or not. I just think I would feel differently about going. I guess the truth is, if they can have a show in Puerto Rico without Richie, then they can have a show in London without David. It might not be the "best show" especially for someone who is a huge David fan (and there are some huge David fans.)

Just to clarify, I didn't mean to suggest that Toxie wasn't funny (I haven't seen it after all)... just that some people hear clips and think they're supposed to be really serious songs, when they're not.

I will reiterate though; David -- probably the least recognised talent out of the "official" four -- has the opportunity to be out of Jon's shadow for the first time since he was 16. If I were him, I'd probably take that opportunity (especially when you know Bon Jovi can function for one night without you) because who knows when it might come again. I don't think it's selfish and it doesn't mean he doesn't care about his brothers.
