THIS!

A couple of weeks ago I listened to some of the 2017 soundboard recordings for the first time "concentrated" (as I went to sleep while my wife had night shift, so I had the chance to listen to it calmly ).
I told her about the performance the next day and I said Jon sings the way I spoke when I had tonsillitis a few years ago. And I didn't mean this as a joke.
It's exactly what you wrote, he's struggling to articulate words, it just sounds weird.

That's what he sounds like. Struggling to even articulate words. You could lower the songs' key as much as you want (and indeed they should) but that by itself wouldn't suffice. It's more than a range problem, I'm afraid.

It may or may not be reversible. I'm a musician, singer and sound engineer but I'm by no means a doctor or vocal coach so my guess is as good as everybody else's. He sang poorly between 2003-2006 then became much better from 2007-2011 again. 2013 wasn't brilliant but it was OK then we all know what happened from 2015 onwards.

If it's really shot then he'll have to re-learn how to do certain things. Not everyone is Bruce Springsteen. Jon wrote and recorded certain songs in a key that was clearly too much for his range. He COULD hit certain notes and sounded ace but it was clearly a stretch. Prayer was a stretch and he said so himself. If you listen to stuff like Hearts Breaking Even it's clearly he's singing in a register that's not his usual.

I think he sounded awesome during the Keep The Faith/These Days era but he couldn't hold it much longer. Crush didn't sound so extreme and I think the early 2000s was when his voice became to change and become very nasal.
He clearly abused his instrument and now it may be damaged beyond repairing. I'm sorry for him but that's just what it is. I wish he'd just do records and low-key gigs from on, to be honest.
Great great post. And I totally agree on the articulation piece. That's been an issue of his for a long time now, even going back to the 2006-2011 era when his vocal range was decent to very good.

Thing is, on those tours when his range was there, like the summers of 2010 and 2011, it didn't really matter if the enunciation wasn't perfect. But when the range is gone, it compounds and becomes hard to listen to.

His range is still there, he can still hit at least a Bb4 and a C5.

So can I when I scream myself up to those high notes. Doesn't mean that I have any proper singing range in that register though.

Hmm, no. He has no range left with his lower register.

Agree.... I'm not saying that it didn't happen. But it's just very out of character for any musician to do something like that... it's like jumping in someone's car and driving it...

This!!!

I've said for a while that JBJ sounds like I do when I'm not well. He sounds like he can't move his tounge or something.

Don't get me wrong, I do think he's getting slightly better. That could be my ears. That's not me saying he sounds good by the way. I just don't cringe half as much as I did in 2017 at live performances and I actually enjoy some lately. Whether that's because I'm watching him move around more or not, I don't know.

I thought he sounded superb at the start of Living With The Ghost. As the song went on, his pronunciation was all over the place. It's weird.

He definitely sounds better moving around though. He isn't focusing as much on the singing side as much as he does when he stands at the mic. He genuinely squeezes it for dear life.

Glad I could make a point here, folks. Let's hope for better days. I can't help to think that none of this would be so bad if Richie was still onboard. But it's a lot of bad stuff combined... a singer whose voice is shot and whose band has lost its character for the most part. Not talking shit about the 'new' guys. It just feels and looks and sounds like a different band. Too painful :/
