Dear Lord, that Hey God version is shockingly bad. I don't want to hear that. I wouldn't go so far as to say that he could rip through the song in 2011, but it was leagues better just 2 years ago. Just listen to this version from 2011. It's exponentially better. And Jon doesn't sound amazing on it, either. But he holds his own.

His vocals are poor this tour but he did have a cold or something too. Doesn't really help.

That version of Hey God sounds off like a mother! He's even aware of it, he has this look of fright during the verses like he's thinking "Jesus, here comes the high notes" and not really feeling the song at all! And it's not unreachable to him because he can hit those notes, and he has, he's maybe not training his voice at all...

Totally agree. I'd take this version over a lot of other songs.

I have a feeling Jon's stuck in a vicious cycle where he think to himself that his voice shot and that he has to struggle and fight to sing the "tough" songs and that's exactly what keeps happening to him. Only that it keeps happening more and more often, and it's getting ugly even on "easier" songs.
I don't think his voice is beyond rescue, but I can tell you for sure he needs to study some technique with a teacher asap, seems to me he's just winging it out there and hoping for the best which isn't happening for him anymore.
