I can understand Jon on this one. I can understand him thinking at the Montreal shows: 'Now this is why I like being on stage'.... and surely that motivates to do that extra step., ie a longer set. Especcially after doing a bunch of shows with dead crowds......

Maybe the crowd is dead because of the weird flow of the setlist? Just listen to the Arizona or Honolulu bootlegs to notice the set going from party song to unknown song which totally kills the flow (for the general audience who are perhaps 80% of the crowd). Get the crowd excited with WSYCGH than follow that with LItOR makes zero sense.
Add to that the fact that since Jovi decided to charge a crazy amount of money for tickets and front row is only available for the super-rich or super-crazy will not help either.
It will not hurt JBJ to change the setlist up each night and give the hardcore fans some sort of surprise. Last night's show in Philly could have easily included Hey God or perhaps even Love for sale to make it special. 5 more minutes for the die-hards is not too much to ask. Replace Superman tonight with Undivided makes so much difference.
If a crowd is dead, try getting them excited instead of going trough the motions. Work harder, it's not like the band isn't getting paid royally for their work. I once attended a Gilby Clarke show with only 30 people in the crowd which was very awkward at the start, but the band worked their asses off and the small group of fans went crazy because of this. If Gilby Clarke can do it, so can Bon Jovi.
