Ive been a BJ fan for a log, long time now, have been to more than my share of live shows (many, many more than my fair share if I'm being honest). I've seen and heard this band be amazing, and have also seen them be merely proffessional.
Back in 1984, in a club whose name I can't even remember anymore I saw a young, loud, raw rock band, who's frontman was a skinny, big haired, cute as hell kid. His voice wasn't awe- inspiringly beautiful nor was it pitch perfect; what it was was unmistakable, powerful and it commanded and demanded attention. (and got it as I recall at least from me) and it held within it all the passion and emotion that this young rock star to be could find within himself.
In Denver on Thursday night I saw the completion of the evolution of this young man, who now is nearly 44. The big hair is long gone, skinny has turned into finely chisled, toned and fit. the kid has become a downright handsome, incredibly sexy, full grown in the prime of his life man.
More importantly, whatever "been there done that ennui, boredom with yet another year spent on the road, or passion for live peforming he had lost, misplaced or set aside in the years betwwen the bands crazy heydays of the late eighties and early nineties and 2005/2006, it has all disappeared this time out. This is my fifth show this tour, and I have been absolutely convinced after each one of them that for at least the two and a half to three hours that he was on stage, Jon has been exactly where he wants to be.
The voice: It still isn't always pitch perfect, it still isn't awe inspiringly beautiful, it's lower, deeper and richer than it was 22 years ago, and those high notes of long ago in songs like Prayer and Runaway are gone for good.
But what has replaced it this time out has impressed me even more. On both the Crush and Bounce tours I saw shows where Jon struggled to push his voice to get it up there, and witnessed his frustration and anger with himself when he couldn't get it. Sometime after Bounce, between box sets, tlfr, football, a movie or two and a family addition or two, Jon did the smartest and best thing he could have done: He stopped long enough to rekey, rearrange, restyle and reconstruct in varying degrees the songs that he feels (rightly or wrongly) that he has to or wants to sing.
I'm a live music fan, I love live shows. I think the thing I like best about them is that each one is unique, it never sounds exactly the same. I don't demand, expect or want exact replications of recorded works. That is why I have the cd's. What I do want live is great performances of the songs done, period. What I have discovered my fifth show into this tour is that the reason this tour sounds so much better to me than the last couple is because that is exactly what has happened. HAND is an very very good record, particularly live. I've heard all but two of the tracks live now and I would take any one of them live any show. I know some of you don't like some of the changes that have been made to some songs, but here's the thing, they are being performed amazingly well. the show works, Jon's voice is as strong at the end of a show Ie putting KTF late in the encore as it is in the beginning and he is clearly comfortable and having fun singing.
Richie: I rather expected to see some rough edges on Richie at this show. It is the first time I've seen them since the divorce mess came about and I figured he might be a bit down, and or distracted. As anyone who has been through the loss of a longterm relationship knows it is a traumatic, unsettling, and often depressing thing. It's tough somedays to just get out of bed, much less go through at least the motions of everyday life. To have to fdeal with all this in public, in front of 15 or 20 thousand people night after night, is quite honestly beyond my comprehension.
Kudos to you Mr Sambora, because somehow, someway you have taken all of those emotions, stresses and distractions and turned them into an energy and a passion that is passing right through thos magic fingers and right on out through those guitar strings. He's playing better than ever, period. He's handling it all, onstage anyway, with style grace and flair.
Personal highlights. Best encore set I have seen on this tour.
LMS- This opener gets better every time I see it. 4 months in and the band is in top tour form, and just how good a show this is going to be is apparent from the first notes of this song. Jon's decision to start this one FOH is simply brilliant. It fires up the crowd and sets a tone that doesn't quit all show long.
ITA- this is not one of the greatest catalog song this one is great live when Jon nails the vocals and puts the passion and emotion into it. This is the third time I've heard it this tour and rest assured he's got it down. It was so beautifully done at this show that I got teary eyed, AND I DO NOT CRY< EVER!!!!
KTF- For a song that has only been intermittenly done this tour it sounds damn fine!!! this one flat out rocked, and Jon sang the hell, out of it.
BOB- Also the second or third time I've heard it this tour. this one seems to have taken on a special meaning between Jon and Richie of late. There is no doubt Jon is standing firmly beside his "right hand " man these days, the bonds between them are very apparent when playing this song, which makes this one even better.
Treat her Right- I really love this cover song. It's a great, fun live song and watching Jon "work it" during this one is pure, enjoyable entertainment.
For those of you that are seeing the band on the west coast in the next couple of weeks get ready!!! I have seen two "magical' shows on this tour and both nights it was the audience that fed the band, who in return gave two of the most kick ass arena shows I've ever seen. Be loud, be energetic, let the band know how much you want them there, trust me they will give it back twofold. Enjoy your show.
For those of you overseas, I truly hope that when this show goes to the stadiums, all the passion, pure joy in playing and fun that I have seen and felt on this US arena tour translates to the big stage. Jon really is in great voice, Richie is playing amazingly, and that new white guitar with his initials is a beauty. The band as a whole is sounding TIGHT!!! The stage the screen, the lighting and the sound are flat out amazing this time out. I really hope all of that trasnlates to the big stage as well.
But most of all, I hope that the passion and pure joy in playing live that Jon has recaptured within himself translates on the big atge as well as it has in the arenas. He's there y'all he really is. the consumate frontman has returned. Enoy your shows.
