It's about the same as European fans, actually.

They did Dry County at the last show at Soldier Field. I can only comment on the portion of the crowd that was around me, but they were into it. As the intro was played, I heard comment after comment along the lines of "I haven't heard this since 19__!" Even the ass in the row in front of me who'd been forced to come by his significant other managed to pay attention through most of the song. That was the first time they'd done the song in a North American city outside of the NYC/NJ area since they brought it out of mothballs.

How can Jon not play Captain Crash every night when the crowd react like this to it?

I was there too, and I loved it obviously. I think they needed to play Runaway last night, and my personal preference would have been in the main set and let Dry County open the encore.

What you call the lowest common denominator is the majority of the audience. I remember when they played all of Lost Highway in Newark, some guy behind me kept yelling "Play something I know!" I thought it was pretty funny, but I think the majority of the audience agreed with him.

I imagine you were in the expensive area of Soldier Field where the more die-hard fans would have been. When Matt and I witnessed Dry County at Giant's Stadium, the two of us lost our minds when it started and were screaming our heads off but I think we were the only two people in our section who knew the song.

The fact that the whole damn show here in the U.S. is aimed at the casual fan is why this diehard gave up. If Jon won't throw a bone our way once a show - not even at a big stadium show - then he doesn't deserve a fan like me. I'm sure I've been replaced with another casual fan and everyone is happy.

And for the record, I had a ticket on the field - in a close section, but not in the pit and not right on the Circle.

I was at this show too, and I remember that a LOT of people left during Dry County. The show was packed, and when Dry County was finished, there were lots of empty spaces visible.

And I have to agree with this. Several of the songs that get pushed were not hits. Sleep When I'm Dead, We Got It Goin On. Yet they get played night after night while the better songs in the repertoire get ignored.
