review......

It might be just a short ferry ride from the mainland but Bon Jovi decided to make a typically grand entrance for the 12th annual Isle of Wight Festival tonight.

Dropping down in a helicopter onto the festival site, the band joined a long and prestigious line of acts who have graced the final night of this legendary music festival.

The New Jersey stadium rock titans had promised a three hour set and weren’t here to disappoint. Led by their charismatic frontman, Jon Bon Jovi, they commanded the definitive headline festival set, packed with hits and treats from more than 30 years in the business.

Though many would be ashamed to admit it, there is probably quite a high number of thirty-somethings that at one time or other had a picture of Jon Bon Jovi on their wall, so this festival finale was going to be more than just music – this was about memories.

But even those who are not Bon Jovi aficionados would find it hard not to have at least been half tempted to fist pump or air guitar along to classics You Give Love A Bad Name or to belt out the lyrical refrain to Bad Medicine or Livin’ On A Prayer, a trio of eighties anthems that have gone on to outlive the decade.

Tonight saw frontman Jon Bon Jovi play the role of expert showman, often stepping to the front of the stage, spotlight centered upon him, and encouraging the audience to raise their hands, clap or sing-along. During It’s My Life or Keep The Faith, where he picked up some maracas, the excitement and interest never waned.

Many bands try to do large scale anthemic rock, but none do it to quite the level of Bon Jovi.

From NME.......

Quote:
Bon Jovi headlined the final day of this year's Isle of Wight festival last night (June 16), playing a mammoth two-hour set.

Coming on half hour late and backed by a screen showing various projections and images, the American band kicked off with 'That's What The Water Made Me' before playing classics such as 'It's My Life', 'Keep The Faith' and 'You Give Love A Bad Name'. The band also found time to play a number of covers including The Rolling Stones' 'Start Me Up' and Status Quo's 'Rockin' All Over The World'.

Jon Bon Jovi, who was sporting an American flag-patterned leather jacket, was in high spirits and engaging in lots of on stage chat throughout, telling the crowd that the Isle of Wight reminded him of the Jersey Shore and asking for "someone to take [him] to the sea". Drawing things to a close with an encore of 'Wanted Dead or Alive' and 'Have A Nice Day', Bon Jovi then finished with a huge singalong of 'Livin' On A Prayer' before exiting.

"and asking for "someone to take [him] to the sea".

I'm not a great musician (trumpet grade 4), but even I know that:
a) It's "someone take me to the C"
b) That it means a key change for Bad Name

You'd think a music journalist would know their stuff.......

Love that the first of the 2 reviews just posted have a difference of an hour in set lengths too.

I'm not really sure what to say about the show last night. My one and only Bon Jovi show of the tour. I stayed away from reviews and set lists of other shows but it looks like one of the UKs finest music festival was treated to boring, auto-pilot Bon Jovi. The three hour set that every one was expecting with encore upon encore never happened.

The crowd weren't too bad, yes the Because We Can singalong was utterly cringeworthy but they kept the unknown, new tracks at bay.

For a hardcore fan, not a great show. Everyone else came away saying it was the show of the weekend. I had a complete stranger put his arm round me after LOAP and smiling from ear to ear he told me he could now die happy.

My biggest gripe of the show was the lack of a certain lead guitarist. There was NO chemistry on stage between band members. Other than asking Bobby to put a dime in the dukebox (or whatever he does) and scowling at Mr X for missing his que to kick off Have A Nice Day, it was very much the Jon Bon Jovi show. I missed Richie. I didn't think I would, but Jon can't do big shows like this without him.

Other than missing his presence, I wasn't up for Phil/Bobby/Jon sharing lead guitar duties. Ok, Jon only took change on Sleep, but Bobby is terrible.

I won't pay to see Bon Jovi again until Richie returns. Last night wasn't the Bom Jovi that I wanted to see. I loved the fact that everyone else I was with appeared to be blown away, testimony to the hits the band can produce, but for someone who knows when the band are phoning it on this just isn't good enough.

Edit: Yes, it is.

They should have played always in the encore and runaway in the main set. That would have topped up the hits and added to the show.
