It depends on the song, I'd say. There are songs that just NEED the original solo. Bad Name, Prayer, Wanted... and Dry County, besides many more. So that's why he shouldn't mess with the original one. But still can he give it a little different touch each time, like he added some notes after the solo was finished in late versions.

Plenty of other songs give room for improvisation. Richie said in 2000 when asked what his favourite live tracks were, those with the long end solos where he can improvise, and he named KTF and "Next 100 Years".

Very good point. Always Live in London, the outro solo might be my favorite solo ever played. Since then, I've heard bits and pieces of that solo but never the same... also never as good. The chemistry between Richie and Tico on that particular solo was fantastic. I am glad the cameras were rolling.

Eventhough I'm glad that I got to hear the Solo close to Perfection at Twickenham in 2008, There are a few improvised solos he's done in the past that I've admired. Here's a few examples:

Giants 2006:

Brussels 2008:

O2 Arena 2010:

I agree with the guitar debate.....not a fan of the one he uses on DC for this tour.

A slight tangent here, but the first solo in Dry County is a beautiful solo. It's always overshadowed by the amaging second solo, but the first is very very good.
