Is there any particular reason for this,is it the norm state side to have seated stadium concert or is it just a few artists that do it?

It became the norm after a Who concert in 1979 where 11 fans were crushed to death. I remember it all too well:

The December 3, 1979 Who concert tragedy in Cincinnati, Ohio, ranks as the most horrific rock concert incident in the United States. Eleven rock fans were crushed to death and scores injured because of gross crowd management failings. In many ways, this disaster lives on like other terrible moments befalling a community. People recall the nightmare in disbelief; many have personal stories to tell. A landmark report on concert safety, Crowd Management: The Report of the Task Force on Crowd Control and Safety, was published in 1980 by a special Cincinnati citizen task force.

In 1999 when Bruce first did his reunion tour - he had to negotiate to get a small GA section right up in front of the stage. And his was the first big show to do that since 1979

While I can definately see why it is being done, when comparing The Who's audience in 1979 to a Bon Jovi or Springsteen audience in 2010 it seems a bit off. I highly doubt people are going to e pushing a shoving their way to the front and moshing at a Bon Jovi or Springsteen gig. But then again, Metallica's shows are always GA in the pit outside of the US and there weren't any deaths as far as I know so....

Axl Rose's GnR tour in 2006 had general admission standing - i mean they were arena shows but same concept. I also seem to recall back in the 80's an AC-DC gig that involved several people being trampled to death. AC-DC didn't want to play the show but were advised that would make the situations = people would riot.

Not all shows forbid general admission here in the US. I've seen many shows where there is a GA section. When Pink played MSG in October she had a GA section. Smaller venues like Roseland or Irving Plaza are standing room only. I saw Nirvana and was close to the stage. I almost twisted my ankle. At a STP show the crowd surged forward and it was scary. People do get hurt. I have been in the pit many times and have always watched out for potential asshats. I am planning to go to a show with a major artist where the venue has seats and a GA section. Running through Central Park to get to the front in high degree heat for Bon Jovi isn't something I would do again.

A lot of the smaller venues that I go to are all GA - but they might hold 5000 instead of 60,000 (as do the big stadiums). Hammerstein Ballroom, Roseland etc are all standing only.

This past Bruce tour that just finished had the complete Giants Stadium floor as GA for the last 5 shows there. That's the first time I saw that. As someone mentioned it isn't the Bruce crowd that will probably have problems - and there weren't any.

Last time they played there was about a week before Giants as well in 2001. I remember them playing Wild is the Wind and Stranger in this Town, other than that the show wasnt very memorable for me. Looking back on the setlist, it wasnt very memorable other than those songs.
