Last night was a very good show. There were maybe not as many visual effects as there were for the Madison Square Garden shows but I think the vocals were actually stronger (and frankly, the vocals are why I am there).

There have been a plague of technical problems at the shows I've seen. The first night at Madison Square Garden, the big screen was out for at least 25% of the show. Last night there were several audio problems early on - Jon's mic went dead for a few seconds and as soon as that came back on he lost the sound to his earpiece. Then the feedback hit - things got sorted out out pretty quickly but there were a lot of problems, even for a first night. Later in the evening there were several video problems but at least we never lost it completely.

In terms of reviewing the show, I'm not as objective as ponrauil. I go to these shows because I enjoy them. I love my rock shows and once the music starts I tend to get sucked in and get lost in the music. Unless something is very bad or way off I tend not to be too critical. I have seen so many shows like this over the years (and not just Bon Jovi) that there is no such thing as the "perfect" show. I usually wish a favorite had been played, or I might notice the singer really struggling, but usually I get hooked early on and I stay "in the moment" until it's over.

With that said, I have to say that Jon is actually sounding better and better. His voice was stronger at the end of the concert that I have heard for a long time. Blood on Blood sounded exceptional - and very close to the end. Richie sounded great singing the first part of Wanted - personally I wish Richie would sing by himself a little more. By the way - Richie was very much on top of this concert. He did apologise for ****ing up the beginning of Bounce which I didn't even notice (I told you - I really go along for the ride).
I much prefer the way Jon has given up trying to sing all the high parts and making me cringe when he sings them flat. His voice sounds so much stronger. And since I enjoy these concerts I'm glad he hasn't just given up entirely just because his voice has changed.

This was my third concert of this tour and the first time for Welcome. It's not one of my favorites on the album but I have to say it comes across with much more power live. The harmony really shines. I noticed that a lot of the younger people really like this song - my daughter thinks it's one of the best on the album. Different strokes I guess.

The place exploded for HAND so I guess that song has really "taken" from this album. Very few in the audience seemed to know Bounce or Everyday though, certainly not a majority.

I saw that some people mentioned Jon's back. If I hadn't seen the MSG shows (or read the boards) I wouldn't have known there was a problem. What they did was cut out the dancing part of Bad Medicine and Jon wasn't jumping up high in his signature move to end a song. Other than that - he was climbing up on the stage, walking along the backs of seats to get to the stage and generally looking fine. They must have some doctors that's all I gotta say - perhaps he was "comfortably numb".

All in all a very good show. The setlists are getting mixed up a little (not a whole lot but some). The audience was over the top once again, the women sitting next to me saw them down at the shore 23 years ago - it was definitely a hometown crowd. And true to form - there was a transit strike at midnight last night (as Jon predicted) so few of us bothered to go to work today - fuggedaboudit

This was definitely not a "phone it in" performance. It's so nice for me to see them back and really putting some intensity in the shows. The Bounce tour just didn't do much for me until the last show or two before Giants when they pulled out so much of their older material.

I will be there again on Thursday night for the final show - hoping for more setlist changes.

Thanks for the review, sounds you had a great time. Hopefully they'll put out some 90ties stuff in Europe later on the tour.

Of the 3 shows I went to, this was the one thing that stood out the most. It's absoulutely deafening when they play HAND. I think even more so than when they would play It's My Life on the Crush Tour.

It may not prove over time to be as big a hit as Prayer or IML, but I really feel as though it's one of their best anthems, and I would hate to see them drop it after this tour ends.

It's a commercially released song and it has had a good response, from all accounts. If Everyday is getting a semi-regular run on this tour, then you would think that HAND will last more than just this tour.

The following review is from our local paper to add to my review above. They promised a complete review in Wednesday's entertainment section.

Jon Bon Jovi performing on stage in East Rutherford, Monday, Dec. 20, 2005.

Gig of a lifetime for local band

For a complete review, see Wednesday’s Entertainment section of The Record.

Who says you can’t go home again?

“Not me,” Jon Bon Jovi told a packed Continental Airlines Arena on Monday night as images of the Jersey Shore flashed on a massive video screen.

“Been round the world as a matter of fact,” he sang, belting the lyrics of “Who Says You Can’t Go Home,” the fourth track off “Have a Nice Day,” his ninth studio album.

“There’s only one place I want to roam.”

That’s Sayreville, where the still boyishly handsome frontman of Bon Jovi grew up. The town he lived in when he was just John Bongiovi. Before he recorded “Runaway,” the song that he handed to a Long Island disc jockey in 1980, launching his rock star career.

He recalled the story Monday before performing his first hit.

He said, “Mr. DJ, I know the chords. I got the melody. Play this song for me. I’m going to be a rock and roll star.”

Bon Jovi went on to sell more than 100 million albums worldwide. His success is partly from knowing his audience.

The band’s latest album sounds like classic Bon Jovi, with additional harmonies by guitarist Richie Sambora and other bandmates.

During Monday’s show the band alternated between anthemic hits from early albums “Slippery When Wet” (1986) and “New Jersey” (198 and tracks off 2005’s “Have a Nice Day.” Shows are also set for Wednesday and Thursday.

Bon Jovi’s song selection shows he knows his audience. This is New Jersey, where the packed arena sang every lyric to “You Give Love a Bad Name” and “Living on a Prayer,” from Bon Jovi’s breakthrough album.

This crowd wanted to hear the favorites from the days when ’80s hair bands ruled the stage and stiffly hairsprayed teased bangs were the look.

Those days are gone. The crowd, predominantly women of all ages and their dates, was coiffed a la 2005.

What hasn’t changed is Bon Jovi’s effect on the ladies. When the now 43-year-old frontman went into the crowd to perform “Bed of Roses,” girls of all ages scampered to touch his hands and swooned in his presence.

Bon Jovi is still the king of the pop-rock love song. He proved it again and again, singing tunes such as “Born to Be My Baby,” “Bad Medicine” and “I’ll Be There For You.”

After performing “Novocaine,” a track from 2005’s release, Bon Jovi addressed the ladies directly.

“Want to know the truth and nothing but the truth,” he said between songs. “The truth is women have always ruled the world. … I’m here to testify to one thing. We know we get kicked around some but it’s all worth the sacrifice of sweet surrender.”

The audience largely surrendered to Bon Jovi, waving their hands when he asked and pumping their arms in imitation of his stage antics.

He had the whole arena standing for much of the two-hour set. Bon Jovi finished the first hour and a half with “Living on a Prayer,” which he began in the emotional acoustic manner he popularized when the band first performed acoustically in the 1980s.

Afterward, Bon Jovi and the band returned to the stage for a multi-song encore, including “Blood on Blood” and what he called the band’s national anthem: “Wanted Dead or Alive.”

The encore lasted half an hour. Bon Jovi joked that it was all right to play for a long time because no one would be able to work with the transit strike.

Besides, he added, “I’ve got nowhere to go, I’m home already.”

For a while it looked like it was all he, he and he, but they managed to mention that it is a band after all.

Kathleen,
Thanks for your review. I was there as well. And I totally agree with you about Jon's voice. He sang his ass off on Blood On Blood and Welcome as well. It was funny when Richie apologized for messing up the beginning of Bounce. He said, "I was in the dark, I couldn't see". And I would say, at the now 12 shows that I've been to on this tour that HAND is by far getting the biggest reception which is cool to see.

Now, we shall see what Wednesday's show brings.

After hearing Run Rodolph Run, I have to correct myself and adjust my opinion.

It's a pretty funny and cool song how they perform it: old school rock 'n' roll !
