I'm home and I should be in bed but I'm still on too much of a high from the concert! I'll write up a proper review tomorrow, but as Kev already told you my initial impressions are that Jon was in top form vocally and had the crowd in the palm of his hand (unlike his mike stand! LOL) It was one of the best, most exciting shows I've ever seen from Bon Jovi. It was, by far, the LOUDEST crowd I've ever been part of. People didn't sit down at all, not even during the acoustic stuff. Jon being out in the audience for Blaze shows that they're still finding new ways to reach the crowd. Even if you weren't one of the ones near that section where he appeared, the possibility that it could have been you had to go home with everyone. After the show people were talking about how cool that was and how surprising it was. I've recently met a girl who lives in the town where I work who is as much of a Jovi fan as me and we went to this show together. It was the first time she'd ever been so close (5th row center) and I got a thrill from seeing how excited she was. The text messaging people can do before the show and during the opening act was really cool--again, making the audience part of the show. We sent in a message that "Becky and Christy from Mississippi say WE LOVE YOU, JON!" Mississippi took up 90% of the HUGE hi-def screen.
I don't have the set list in order, but they started with Last Man Standing, Bad Name, and Complicated. I'm a bit lost of what came where after that. BUT Sleep and Bad Medicine were not connected, so that was cool. Bad Medicine was intro'd with the old song "Good Love," a great improvement after the monotony of Shout. They did both Captain Crash and Just Older. The acoustic portion included Always, I'll Be There For You , and Blaze. Nothing from Bounce or These Days. From the new CD, they also did HAND, The Story of My Life, and Who Says You Can't Go Home. All the songs from the new CD went over well. Story of My Life was excellent! It's easily my live favorite from HAND.
Jon's voice was fabulous!! The girls that we met up with in Omaha were not members of any Jovi fan boards, just people going to the show because they're locals. They all commented that Jon's voice was so strong and they appreciated it when singers really sing. None of them had ever seen Bon Jovi before and they thought the show was excellent. I like getting an "outsider's" point of view. They don't give a crap about set list changes or the high note in Prayer. They were there to have a good time and the show exceeded all expectations.
When Jon and Richie sing I'll Be There for You together, they're so close their noses are almost touching! LOL Christy and I both would love to have been Richie at that point.

Jon and Richie were being playful all night long. During Story of My Life, they were standing together and Jon pointed to Richie when he sang, "when I paint my masterpiece, I swear I'll show you first" and then Richie pointed to himself and looked out at the audience like, "He's going to show ME first!" At the end of the show both Tico and Richie told the audience to cheer for Jon.
When Jon held the mike out over the audience, it slipped out of his hands. He had this look of complete horror on his face as he was trying to catch it. Fortunately, it didn't hit anyone and he was able to make a joke out of it by scolding the mike and threatening to kick it. Afterwards he said, "I'm sorry baby. My microphone got excited." The other guys were cracking up. When it comes to showmanship, Jon is still the master!
Given my 18 month or so "new" interest in guitar solos I was paying more attention to Richie than I ever have before and, well, was disappointed in all the old songs because they're still being done the same way. The new songs were more fun for focusing on guitar. I think people will be pleased with Complicated and Story of My Life. The live setting does nothing to improve the crappy lyrics of Complicated, but it sounded better than it does on the CD. It didn't inspire me to come home and listen to it on HAND, but it wasn't as annoying as it is on the CD.
Jeff and Bobby only accented the musicianship of the band and they didn't distract. I guess they're kind of like Hugh in that way. Dave's still having a ball behind the piano. Tico gets his stardom on the big screen, Richie's the right hand man and Jon is the superstar. It was almost funny, but I kind of felt bad for the band because when Jon was out in the audience singing Blaze, there the band was on stage and everyone in the place had turned to look at the side of the arena where Jon was. I enjoy looking around a few times a night and seeing how the audience as a whole was responding. Omaha was one of those crowds that ate up every moment.
FABULOUS SHOW!!!! I've been hesitant to go to Nashville because it's mid-week and I'd have to miss two days of work. After last night, I'm ready to go to Nashville and miss Tuesday and Wednesday at work and take off that Friday for Tampa too. Now if only money really did grow on trees....
