isn't there a line "everybody's got a cross to bear these days"? there are other lines in the song that richie can easily relate. and for me, the song is about triumphing over hardships.

I don't hear him mention Jon there. He does talk about relating lyrics to your life (in that respect These Days is almost prophetic in its relevance to Richie's life, it's quite eerie). As I've said before, it's nice that someone in Bon Jovi remembers that the These Days album exists.
