Yes, there's a bunch of great guitar players who can't technically read music. Eddie Van Halen couldn't for instance if my memory is right.

The well known urban myth that Eddie can’t read sheet music, said by the man himself. Well, at least for his piano lessons as a kid, he did. A classical trained Russian piano teacher won’t show him classical pieces with “and now with your left hand those 3 keys” etc.

Sure, PhilX could cut it without any sheet music - the most important thing for a guitar player is to know where are the notes on the fretboard and how they act together (scales and modes).
