About the thanks for what I think that here we have this kind of example where we can see how it's difficult to stand in others people shoes ....I do beliEve that every american citizen strongly and honestly deeply believe that their army is making their life safer ... but for me as an outside person I have some doubt about that .. no offense ... I do believe that since the 2WW the usa soldiers helped some countries to defend themselves and attacked others and so on but I am really honestly wondering *when* did the soldiers fight and lost their life to make american citizen's life safer ?? is for me still a big ? (a big question mark) it's the purpose of the army to defend the country ... but most of the time the soldiers don't defend your country nor your life is safer because of what they did .. but here it's really a matter of how I see the world ..every usa citizen see the world with usa citizen eye .... I am not an usa citizen ...

here is a little side note

I went to the usa in february 2003 (a tough time to visit the states for a frenchie I can tell you) anyway .. I enjoyed my trip (with the girls we had a lot of fun )we went to Atlantic City to see the band .. it was our last show before leaving ... I was walking on the path close to the beach and a guy possibly slightly drunk began to talk to me while walking (Atlantic City is a little las vegas people there are gambling.. note from me just to show the mood ) he asked me from where I come from I said french .. he began to "nicely" attack me as a betrayer and bla bla bla ... and he asked me what I thought about the Irak war in the coming (it wasn't beginning yet) and I said I wasn't pro war and he just explained me what he was sure about .... WAR IS GOOD FOR OUR ECONOMY , WE NEED A GOOD WAR TO MAKE OUR COUNTRY STRONGER AND TO HAVE A STRONG ECONOMY BACK ....(he never said the usa was in danger and had to be protected he talked $$ !! BUT hey it's Atlantic City money is important there ...everyone around is here TO MAKE MONEY )
I smiled at him and said goodbye.. he wasn't a bad guy but I still don't get it ... what I can say is : YES the army make then your life BETTER economically certainly but for me a better life worth it if it's done in a fair way ... to make everyone life better by doing A WAR to improve MY COUNTRY economy is not exactly my philosophy... this is maybe why I have some hard time to think at the army guys are saviors of your life , they are savior of your bank account ... they are doing a hard job to make the usa richer/stronger and a stronger leader but is it to make your country safer because ppl want to attack you ... NO I don't believe so ...each american citizen risk to be killed by anything made in america (tabaccco bad food too much medics too much stress too much violence too much guns ) much more than killed by ppl the usa army is attacking invading ...even if it's done for the supposed good health of the planet ...I cannot judge what is good for others

I don't want this post to be offensive to anyone it's just my feelings ..I am a peace lover and I am disgusted to see how many USA kids in their 20's died in Irak and I cry for them believe me .. but I think their job even if it's the tougher job ever it's not a fair one it's not a good one ... this said I think they deserve to be thanked by the usa citizens ... to be the one WHO DO THE JOB and often the one who never get the BENEFIT

I am having trouble to see how THE USA army is protecting usa citizen life .. BUT I BELIEVE THOSE SOLDIERS ARE DOING A TOUGH JOB AND DESERVE TO BE RESPECTED BY THEIR COMPATRIOTS ... compatriots who are the one seated in their couch while they fight for the country comfort (they don't fight to protect life but to basically protect economical comfort ) and THEY RISK THEIR LIFE for that and they take others ppl life for that as well

VERY SORRY FOR SUCH ALONG POST ....

Peace !

for me welcome them and thank them is pretty much the same thing unless you're a relative.
i still don't think that they are the heroes who should be thanked for something and the fact that they're willing to give their lives for a war like the war in iraq doesn't make them any better. it's not that i don't feel sorry for those who got killed but at least it was their choice to join the army and go to wars unlike the people in the countries they invaded.

to rainsong:i don't disagree with the reasons you said about why young people join the army but you should not overlook the unemployment factor as there is not only the 5,2 of official unemployment there are also the unofficial unemployment and the underemployed people. furthermore the army can offer higher wages and more advantages than many other jobs.
either way only a few of them sign the army for idealistic reasons.

But that's my point. The propagandistic hipocrisy of your sick current administration that plays with the understandable feelings of soldier's relatives to make it look like it is a reputable venture to go to Iraq.
so you blame the soldiers for that??? Take it up with the administration, but don't disrespect the people that signed up for a job that took the wrong turn.

[qutoe] What exactly was worse for you before they went? [/quote]

Nothing of course. Again, this war has nothing to do with supporting and appreciating military personnell. Nothing, though the Bush Administration would love your and UglyQueens opinion about he military and would LOVE and do claim that anybody who doesn't support the current war, does not respect the people in the service. Which is not true. Most Democrats support the people in the service, just not the current war.

even more reason to show appreciation --- after all they are giving their lifes for lies and deceit.

I'd thank them to do what they signed on for - no questions asked. It's not up to them to question the motif or the right or wrong of things and I don't want them to do that. It's not how military works or ever could work.

Honestly, I think people that don't ever sign up for the service to begin with should be quite thankful that others are ready to give their lives, while they themselves would never even think of that.

Maria, I think we talk at cross purposes. Or I only worded it badly. Actually, I don't mean to not thank them at all.
I am against the praising, the hypocritical glorification that they are heroes that save the western freedom.
The impression I have is that a lot of Americans just hear oh they could have been killed - man, they are "true American heroes" blablabla let's celebrate them.
Thank them for doing a thankless job, ok. But that is not the attitude some events put across IMO. Appreciation yes, glorification no!

I hope I was a bit clearer now.
