Bon Jovi to make amends
By CAMERON ADAMS

THERE may have been more than 20 bands on the bill at Rumba, but most of the 30,000 fans were there for two reasons, Bon Jovi and Pink.

Many Bon Jovi fans complained last night about paying nearly $100 for a 45-minute performance by the rock band.

And singer Jon Bon Jovi poked fun at the pop road show, calling it a "circus" and promised a full tour next year.

But their performance full of greatest hits was designed for stadiums, even half-empty ones, and showed why the band had survived more than 20 years.

Indeed, many of their earliest songs were hits before much of the crowd was born.

US singer Pink, sporting a mohawk, showed precisely why she's become the most exciting pop star in years.

Providing an antidote to plastic pop stars, Pink's fiery hits Just Like a Pill and Get the Party Started finally ignited the crowd after an afternoon of strangely muted reactions to many big acts.

But the surprise package was local star Natalie Imbruglia.

While lack of radio support has seen her second album White Lillies Island languish in the charts, in a live context songs such as Come September and Wrong Impression were more powerful.

Other highlights included the clever British trio Sugababes.

Festival organisers blamed the global downturn in concert sales for the lower than expected turn-out of about 30,000 fans.
