That's where I first heard of the title, anyway; back when the JT Detective Agency was trying to figure out what songs might be on the album based on new copyrights.

Rage of Angels has been around a lot longer than I thought, according to this quote from Joe Lynn Turner. I also thought JBJ and Desmond were the only co-writers; but Joe Lynn was a co-writer, too. The quote was in Daniels' Bon Jovi Encyclopedia, which was published in 2009, so it's at least that old. But from what he says about it, sounds to me like it may be even older than that. Like, back in the day older. Here's the quote:

So there ya go. I guess we don't need to hold our breath anymore, hoping to hear it.
Thank you very much for the information Jackie, so probably will never see the light. I really like the title of this one.

But coming back to Jackie: I didn't notice that many off-pitch notes, to be honest. Yes, there were some, but IML especially sounded quite good, even on the higher parts. Or did you mean the verses?

Whether or not it's total BS is on Derek Shulman; I wasn't there.

Regardless of when he said it, he was explaining why he was so gung-ho to convince Jon to choose Polygram over Atlantic, and how Jon's personal magnetism, or "star" quality, outweighed any concerns he might have had about technical ability. Since the contract was signed on July 1, 1983, you're right - he had to be referring to something prior to that.

I was talking about the songs in general - verses and choruses. And you're not alone, btw; a friend told me she couldn't hear it, either. So I went back and listened to the show again; and I stand by the statement that he is off-pitch a good deal of the time throughout the show. He's not off by much, granted; it's not like he's a whole step (or even a half-step) off. But he's singing "in the cracks" a lot. It's like when a guitarist bends a note before resolving it. Sometimes a vocalist will do that for effect, but they eventually resolve or "tune" it. In most of the places where I noticed it, Jon isn't tuning it.

It really has nothing to do with how many notes Jon can hit (or could hit back in the day). That's range. I wasn't referring the "5 notes" part of the quote. My concern is about pitch. It's landing on the right pitch at the right time that seems to be his problem. And "close" doesn't count; pitch is a finite value. Someone is either on pitch or they're off.

That said, I'm glad you enjoyed it and didn't notice when he was off. It wasn't my intention to rain on anybody's parade. When I said it bothered me, I wasn't criticizing. It wasn't unlistenable, by any stretch. It just concerns me that he seems to be having increasing trouble matching tones. That can't bode well for the future.

In ml Jon's early days, it really was his energy as a frontman that outweighed his vocal abilities. I remember a performance of Only Lonely where they were all on fire, but Jon was off key for at least half of the song.

Yeah, it's the only song that sounds like a JBJ solo song. That's why I would like a JBJ solo album. Different musicians, more intimate and personal, less universal messages and leave for a moment the formulas that feel tired. Jon enjoyed more with Kings of Suburbia than with the band lately. It would have been great for a solo album with a band of different musicians, but unfortunately Jon does not see it.

A teardrop is also a song that I love.

Hmmmm it must be a phrase Joe likes, he's had songs released with that title and the phrase has popped up in the other songs he's recorded. It looks like you cracked this one wide open Jackie.

Makes you wonder why it randomly got added to ASCAP out of the blue. I wonder if it was earmarked for some project. Maybe Burning Bridges?

I think they all have that phrase somewhere. If I think about how many Open All Night / These Arms Are Open All Night / These Open Arms titles Jon has thrown around in his career...
Wasn't even one more tune registered under one of these titles at some point that we didn't hear? I vaguely remember that...

That could make sense. But now you've got me wondering... Desmond used a section of it in another song and Joe Lynn said that it's too bad it wasn't released so it sounds like Jon was the one who put a hold on it. The fact that it hit ASCAP with BB songs makes me wonder if Jon had a change of heart while he was going through old stuff to put BB together. (I thought it was THINFS - guess that blows my shot at joining the JT Detective Agency, huh?)

Or since you mentioned that Joe Lynn had used the title and the phrase in other stuff, maybe Jon and Desmond went back and recycled it into something different. Maybe that's why we just saw the two of them in the ACE database. (But then, of course, they would have had to basically write a new song or Joe Lynn would have been listed.)

Now I wanna know what Aerosmith song Desmond used that section in....

Jon didn't care about that while putting together Burning Bridges - otherwise we wouldn't have gotten those carbon copies of Nickelback and Swedish House Mafia on it
