Stage and seating configurations have a lot to do with how many seats are acutally available. Aside from that, there's a difference between a sellout and a capacity crowd.
I saw Metallica and Slayer headline shows at the same arena one week apart. While the Metallica show was packed from top to bottom, the Slayer show was packed from the second level down -- the top tier was completely empty. A failure on Slayer's part? Not if the promise to sell the "capacity" number of tickets was fufilled. Of course Metallica's promoter MADE more money -- but since Slayer's promoter SPENT less money, the
profit margins were probably quite similar!
