I'm just listening to this New Orleans performance and it was actually an eating disorder that was killing the girl who requested Miracle. Jon told her he didn't know it, started strumming the guitar to remember the chorus and sang the chorus and the first verse, minus a few lines he couldn't remember. Then he said he'd never performed the song before.
