If true, it's impressive how he improved and maintained those standards from 2008-11 even though he smoked back then.

Wasn't Jon smoking something like methanol cigarettes or something from 2007? I don't smoke and think it's vile but I remember reading the Q mag with a big piece with Jon in & I'm sure he changed his cigarettes. Not sure what the benefits are, if any..

I donÂ’t think itÂ’s an exaggeration. Since the end of 2013, his voice has been constantly bad. Some nights he is a little bit better, but on the average heÂ’s been very poor.

Have we gotten these performances and setlists just a few years ago, most people who are praising the recent performances would have torn the band apart. That’s called lowering the standards. If you read most of the reviews nowadays, there’s always the “if you take it for what it is”, “if you don’t mind the vocals”, and so on ... I get that Jon is older, and it’s not 2011 anymore. However, there’s a big diference between adjusting your expectations because Jon is older (and he won’t sound the same as 1995 anymore), and lowering your standards so much that the fact that he sings 90% of the songs out of key it’s acceptable because you’re having fun. I have lots of fun hearing my brother singing in the shower, but should I pay 100+ euros for it ? Nahh ...

Yes, but we're not talking about 2011 or even 2013 here. I replied to a post which basically said that Jon's vocals in 2015/16 were better than they are now, and I don't agree with that. I've said why in my previous post. But it's true that his voice is very inconsistent nowadays.

It's been a while since I've seen it, but there was definitely a video on YouTube of Jon being asked questions about the movie while he smoked, but the one I saw was of just one guy asking him questions interview style and he was not sneaking or hiding his phone. It was at night, and Jon was sitting on the step of his trailer smoking and drinking coffee.
OK, that's probably the video I meant. As I've never seen it myself, I just randomly dug some vague details from my memory that I (thought I) had read and therefor ended up with incorrect information

"Methanol" or maybe "menthol" cigarettes? I think the latter... damn, now I can't help thinking about cigarettes that smell like fart

I'm pretty sure I'd tolerate cigarettes more if they smelled like fart. Call me weird, but I'm sick of the actual way they smell, both my mom and dad are smokers and I'm sick of the smell and everything.

His voice is at an all time low. Thousands of people left the show in Belgium because of it.

I'm tired of hearing the same old shit about Wembley too. It might have had the best atmosphere of the tour but the performances and setlist were crap.

Nothing has gone downhill from Wembley, it's just that no one cares about shows in the arse end of Europe.

He said it in several interviews, mostly in 2017, I think; but these were the first that I could put my hands on today.

From January 2017:
Quote:
“...You don’t just say, ‘I don’t want to come into work today, I’m not in good shape.’ F*ck you.” The upheaval provoked a long period of musical inactivity after the tour ended. “I couldn’t sing in the shower!” he says. “I’m not exaggerating. I couldn’t f*cking sing.”
https://www.ft.com/content/a3951c6c-...b-e7eb37a6aa8e

I first thought the whole tone of that article seemed a little off, tbh; but then he made a similar comment about a week later, on video:
https://www.billboard.com/articles/n...show-interview

Around that same time he also said, in several interviews, that he didn't/couldn't write during 2014 because his guitar "gave him the finger." He reportedly said something from the stage, as well. This is from a review of the Phoenix show in March 2017.

Quote:
... [Jon] reflected on the hard times surrounding the 2013 departure of Richie Sambora for “personal reasons” as part of a heartfelt speech about carrying on.

"For those of you who know," Bon Jovi noted, "2013, it ended tumultuously. And in 2014, I was in a fog. I was in a daze. And it wasn't particularly positive. And I'd stare at that guitar and I'd sort of just give it the finger. And to tell you the truth, I think it gave me the finger back. But by 2015, I started to tell that same guitar stories and it started to sing to me."
https://www.azcentral.com/story/ente...-jon/98777798/

As for it being out of character, or sounding weird, it may seem less so when you consider that when Jon first started saying "out of great pain comes great songs" he was referring to the pain of losing the Bills (2014) or the spat with his label (2015). By the time he started promoting THINFS (and making these comments), those were non-issues; and it seems Richie was the only "pain" he had left to talk about. So his story about 2014 changed, significantly, from what he'd originally said in November of that year. The reason he gave Pierre Robert for not writing (which usually went along with his guitar giving him the finger and not being able to sing in the shower) had nothing to do with any "upheaval" caused by Richie leaving, as was indicated in 2017. (In fact, he implied that there wasn't any upheaval over Richie leaving because "it's no big deal.") In that interview, he said, "I'm writing again, y'know. I didn't have the wherewithal to write this whole year. I was really focused on football."
