Me, Richie is the real deal. Phil X is a nobody who fills in when the real talent is away.

Richie is way more than just the guitar player. He writes songs, produces songs, represents the band in the public at interviews and stuff together with Jon and is the front man beside Jon.

Richie can write, that is for sure and the band has been all the better for it. But out of the two, I think Jon is the better writer... Letting You Go, Bed of Roses, Fear, I Want You, Always and several other quality songs are to Jon's credit. Jon doesn't NEED Richie to write. But Richie's harmony and guitar style is essential to Bon Jovi... quality Bon Jovi anyway.

The duo together is stronger than apart on stage though. Remember Bridge over Troubled Water? That was magic and it was just the two of them.

I think Phil X is very talented and much more motivated than Richie has been in some time. But I don't think Richie has anything to worry about.

I think we have more to worry about with the band calling it quits than the band going on without Richie.

IIRC? I'm sorry... my brain is shot today.

I listed the songs Jon had written by himself. A couple of those are my all time favorites. Now, you could argue that they wouldn't be the same songs without the guitar parts or harmony or even production... and you'd be right.

But Santa Fe and Miracle are two of my all time favorite songs and I don't remember if those had co-writers (and I am too lazy to look it up) but they were certainly written without Richie. Same goes for Father Time or The Answer or Undiscovered Soul... I don't think Jon was involved with any of those.

So I don't think they NEED each other to write, but I do think some songs are all the much better for it.

'If I recall correctly'.

Jon also wrote 'Dry County', 'Saturday Night' and 'Something To Believe In' himself. The guy is a genius when he wants to be.

Saturday Night is credited Jon/RS/DC I suppose.

Come on, why should anyone fear that Richie would be out of a job just because some young, fresh, talented, eager guitarists fills in for him? Richie is not just "the guitar player" in Jon's band. It's basically the chemistry of them both that made BJ the band as great (also commercially) as they are today in my humble opinion.
