Default The Neil Young Thread

Neil Young is one of the greatest, most influential music artists of all time. Fact. The man is a musical genius who has made more classic albums than most bands have albums.

His extraordinary catalogue of classic songs includes Like A Hurricane, The Needle And The Damage Done, Helpless, Old Man, Rockin' In The Free World, Hey Hey My My, Mr Soul, Heart Of Gold, Harvest Moon, Cowgirl In The Sand, Cortez The Killer, Southern Man, A Man Needs A Maid...I could go on.

The amazing albums he has made include After The Goldrush, Harvest, Freedom, On The Beach, Tonight's The Night, Rust Never Sleeps, Harvest Moon and, more recently, Prarie Wind and Chrome Dreams II. He's been a member of Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and played with some of the greatest musicians ever. What a career.

So here is a thread for a discussion of, in my opinion of course, the greatest singer/songwriter of all time. Fell free to discuss.

Great songwriter, yes. Mediocre singer, unfortunately. I just can't bring myself to like his voice, no matter how hard I try. It's too... I don't know, whiny? That being said, I LOVE songs like Heart Of Gold, Like A Hurricane and Only Love Can Break Your Heart. They are milestones in the history of music.

Shalom !

Can't stand his voice. Sounds like a castrated cat to me.

I salute you,

Neil is FANTASTIC!!!
His guitarplaying is beyond words, improvising like a mad man. Old Black is quite possible the best guitar in the world
His voice is brilliant, he changes the tone in it too his songs. His voice fits his songs perfect. Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black) has the coolest guitarsound ever! It's the sound of an amp begging for mercy! Sounds like it's about to explode

Dunno what more to say really, but he kicked total ass on this summers tour!

All very true. Dunno why people don't like his voice, to me he's a great singer. His best perfermance vocally is this, though:

I'm listening to a magical gig by Neil from Amsterdam 1989. Amazing. All acoustic, and a brilliant setlist.

1. Hey Hey, My My (Out Of The Blue)
2. Rockin' In The Free World
3. Old Laughing Lady
4. Don't Let It Bring You Down
5. Someday
6. Crime In The City
7. Eldorado
8. Too Far Gone
9. This Note's For You
10. The Needle And The Damage Done
11. After The Goldrush
12. Hangin' On A Limb
13. Heart Of Gold
14. Ohio
15. Rockin' In The Free World (Reprise)

If he'd have played Helpless it would have been even more brilliant. His voice is great, lots of range and passion, as is his harmonica, guitar and piano playing. It's a great quality broadcast so I urge everyone to go and look for the bootleg of this gig, or if you can't be arsed PM me.

Yeah I got that one, not my fav, but it's very good.
I think Weld is hs best album, quite possible the best livealbum ever, by anyone. The antiwar theme over the whole album is amazing. The way Crazy Horse follows their great leader into the music is beyond words.
