I love the second half of DM career…you know, from Violator to the last one. I had this dark period in 1998/99 an they were constantly on my cd-player. I think they’ve record very good tunes, a little too dark sometimes . Nowadays I have to be in the right mood to listen to them…maybe because they remind me something bad.
Unfortunately I’ve never seen them live.
These are the records I have:
Violator
Songs of faith and devotion
Songs of faith and devotion (live)
Ultra
The singles (2nd one)
Exciter

Those are basically the ones you need. DM 101 is a good one too. I hear ya with the mood, for a while i was doing drugs and i would always have them on 99% of the time while high. Now if i listen to them it brings back bad feelings.

Great band though! if you get a chance to see them live Please do!

Hmm..I need to be reading more around here.

Yes, I'm into Depeche. I wouldn't say I'm a hardcore fan or anything and yes they can be a bit too dark at times. I saw them on the Devotional tour twice, which was basically the pinnacle.

The whole People are People thing.....they don't even touch that song or period and haven't since the late 80s. Everything Counts was the only song from that period getting played in the early 90s and even that was remixed to give it a heavier sound.

They didn't really get into their element until Black Celebration...but that went a bit too far to the other extreme (negativity.) Music for the Masses finds the balance with some great material in Behind the Wheel, Sacred, Strangelove, Never Let Me Down Again.

What Alive! was to KISS, 101 is to Depeche Mode. While much of that live album draws from everything from the beginning up to Music for the Masses (which was the tour at the time), the old material comes off better live than their studio counterparts. Yes, People Are People is on it, and is probably the last time it was played live. But mostly the set draws from Music for the Masses and Black Celebration.

I normally would be aversive to Techno-stylization, but Depeche Mode is a hybrid. They went from being all keyboard in the early 80s to mixing live instruments in with the keyboards. In a way, Depeche Mode grew much like Bon Jovi did and was enjoyable from a fans perspective to see that creative growth.

Spunky, I told you to pick up Songs of Faith and Devotion. It's essentially their These Days. You just have to learn to drop the preconcieved notions about them. Cuz really, the image you have of them is a very old one...outdated and hasn't represented them since the mid 80s. Violator is another great one, though the reworkings of songs like Personal Jesus, World In My Eyes and Enjoy the Silence on the Devotional tour outdo the original studio versions. You can experience all of that on the DVD of that tour.

I have to be in the mood to listen to them also. But listening to them doesn't neccessarily bring up bad memories. I got into them because originally I was very much into keyboards before I picked up the guitar...so they basically meld the two genres that I was into perfectly.

I used to really like them. My favourite used to be Personal Jesus.
