Some recent news from the GNR forums. Some of the mods have contacts with the band, and have posted some unofficial news that's supposed to be on the level.

The band has officially announced a South American Tour, the unofficial news is that they are planning to release 3 new songs this year, possibly as part of the tour.

Considering the last Guns N' Roses album, Chinese Democracy, took a full 14 years to complete (writing began in 1994 when they still had more than one member of the band that recorded their seminal album Appetite for Destruction), it’s surprising that another album could be out a mere 6 years later. However, strong rumours have been swirling since the end of 2012 about an album in 2014 and certainly recording will have been taking place in between GnR’s sporadic, yet fairly constant, touring since 2008 so the notion isn’t as fanciful as it may seem…

There have not been strong rumours about a follow up at all. Every GnR die hard knows there just isn't a new album in the pipeline, and pretty much every band member seems to know it too.

These "new" stories about a possible new record are bogus, and in fact very similar to the stories about Chinese Democracy back in 2001, 7 years before the album would be released. The only difference is that this time no recording has taken place. Get it out of your head, the band has never written and/or recorded together. The only thing out there are outtakes from Chinese Democracy.

Nope. All that has been said is that the band are preparing to present 3 new songs during the South American tour. Whether they're actually new additions to the setlist (as in old songs from UYI), outtakes or cover songs has yet to be specified. Nothing has been said about releasing new stuff, as far as I'm aware.

Dude, after the nightmare that it's been to be a GNR fan since '98, I get and understand the skepticism, and I myself am not holding my breathe. However, objectively, there really have been strong indications that they are working on a new record. Several band members have said as much, several articles say they have been postponing shows since late '13 to get more studio time, DJ and Dizzy tweeted a picture of themselves in the studio last year, On Jimmy Kimmel Axl said a new record wouldn't take as long as CD did, and we've been starting to get leaks - most of them CD remixes, but we also got a new song 'Goin' Down'.

The only band member who says anything to the contrary is Bubblefoot; he says nothing new is coming but he's made no secret that he doesn't think songs recorded a decade ago are new. So that could mean that they've been in the studio recently, finishing up, or updating old material. Which is fine by me, I'm dying to hear those chinese leftovers, and if it hasn't been heard, as far as I'm concerned, it's a new record.

Anyway, like I said, I'm not holding my breathe. The band has a bad track record of almost comebacks and disappointing fans. But the signs are there that something is happening. So I'm bring cautiously optimistic.

Which, again, means nothing. They can sit in the studio all they want to and record loads of things but as long as Axl doesn't appear in the studio, none of it will actually be released. Pretty much all members keep making excuses as to why no recording or writing has taken place, but they've all confirmed that the entire band has never written or recorded together, let alone have Axl join them somewhere in the process.

The "new" song is still a Chinese Democracy outtake, meant for a re-release of Chinese Democracy. And I'd take what Axl says with a pinch of salt. Back in 2001 Axl said the album wouldn't be out soon, but that it'd also not take years anymore either. It'd take him another 7 years to get the record out, which eventually was a deal he didn't agree with. If it'd been up to him the album had not been released in 2008.

Bumblefoot has been very clear that nothing is happening. He actually seems to be the only band member willing to speak the truth and not have fans dangling and raising their hopes with vague studio pictures or cryptic hints on Facebook. And every time he seems to do so, he gets warned by GnR management not to speak his mind anymore. He's made it very clear that no creative progress has been booked ever since he joined the band, whether that's recording old or new stuff.

You can be cautiously optimistic all you want, but a new album just isn't in the pipeline. You say you've followed the process since 1998 so surely this should all be very familiar to you? The recordings are owned by Geffen records, so can't be released by anyone else unless another record company dares to cough up the money for it. And seriously, who's interested in dated material from a band that doesn't really seem to exist anyway? The bottomline is that considering the lukewarm reception to Chinese Democracy was, and Axl not being willing to do any decent promo, the only way anything would happen is once Axl gets involved. And that just hasn't been happening lately.

Salaam Aleikum,
Sebastiaan

Dude, nothing means anything until there's an official announcement and release date, the point of my post is that there is activity and reason to be optimistic. If you want to be a pessimist, feel free, I'm not trying to convince you otherwise. Personally, I'm optimistic, and looking toward to something new.

As for as for people not caring, people obviously still do or else thee weren't be any views on this thread and I'd be talking to myself. There wouldn't be multiple GNR forums with thousands of members. Thousands more would buy a new album just because of nostalgia, curiosity, or brand name recognition. And a label should care, because there is still money to be made there.

If they just released Checkmate, I'd be happy with that.

Let the countdown commence: Axl Rose has confirmed the existence of two finished Guns N' Roses albums to follow up their 2008 LP Chinese Democracy that could come out in the near future."We recorded a lot of things before Chinese was out," Rose said in an interview with Revolver. "We've worked more on some of those things and we've written a few new things. But basically, we have what I call the second half of Chinese. That's already recorded. And then we have a remix album made of the songs from Chinese. That's been done for a while, too."Aerosmith's Joe Perry Explains Why Guns N' Roses Are One of Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest ArtistsRose said that he did not have a timeline for when the albums would come out, but he did intend to address it after Guns N' Roses conclude its residency at Las Vegas' Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. (The group's final show is scheduled for June 7th.) "We're going to start looking very seriously at what we're doing," Rose said in regard to a release plan. Before that happens, however, Guns N' Roses will release a 3-D concert film of their Vegas residency to theaters on June 18th and 19th.Previously, Guns N' Roses guitarist Richard Fortus had reported that the group was "working on stuff." When pressed for a release schedule, he said, "Hopefully very soon we're going to have new stuff out," adding, "well, in the next year."Elsewhere in his interview with Revolver, which coincided with Rose's acceptance of the Lifetime Achievement Award at the magazine's Golden Gods Awards in April, the singer named the one artist he thinks should also receive a Lifetime Achievement Award. "Mick Jagger is one of the greatest athletes who ever lived, just for how much he puts into it onstage," he said. "I saw the Stones in Vegas on their last tour and it's evident how hard they work at it." When Revolver asked if Rose could see himself performing at age 70, the singer said, "I'm starting to get there! Bastard makes you work for it, doesn't he?"
