Default The Official Thread For, The Greatest Band Of All Time...The Beatles!

As the title says. ****ing hell, The Beatles. A collection of three geniuses and one above average drummer (sorry, Ringo, nothing more, nothing less). They could all sing. They could all play a variety of instruments. They could all write songs. Together they recorded some of the greatest albums and songs of all time.

Revolver, Sgt. Pepper's, Abbey Road, The White Album...all absolute classics. Songs like A Day In The Life and Strawberry Fields Forever are pieces of musical perfection, combining brilliant melodies and lyrics with intricate vocal harmonies, and a ridiculous range of different instruments. This band means everything to me. Even more than Oasis, and that is something, believe me. I've always had The Beatles, man, and in many ways, everyone has. There's scarcely a piece of music since the early 60s that doesn't carry their influence. If there's ever a band that is truly the greatest, it is these guys.

Anyway, enough of my Beatles wankfest. Who's your favourite member? What's your favourite album by them? Never quite got them? Why Not?

Roll up, Roll Up!

----------------------

PS. I'll answer the questions that I posed at the end of that post myself. The answers for me are;
1. John > George > Paul >>> Ringo
2. Revolver.
3. Of course I have, hence my gushing praise of them/
4. As above.

I don't know, maybe I'm too young too appreciate them, never really listened to them, whatever. I have never really been a fan.

They must have been good for the impact they have made, though.

1. George, John, Ringo, Paul
2. Hard Day's Night
3. I resisted when i was younger because my parents are into them. But how can you resist? My Dad gave me all his beatles vinyl earlier this year. Was an emotional moment lol. Vinyl is the only way to listen
Also my favourite stuff if is the early stuff. 3 Minute sections of absolute pop perfection. Still have alot of love for the rest though.

Yeah, they are a great band. I have the Number 1 album somewhere and i love some of the songs on there. Coming from Liverpool aswell is another reason why i listen to them and know how big they are.

Aloha !

1. Paul, don't care about the others when it comes to my favourites.
2. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
3. I digged them when I was only 5 years old and a McCartney concert was the first concert I ever attended.

I agree with hometownboy. People rate Lennon higher nowadays because of the ideals he strived for but it's Paul's Beatle songs that are still being played on the radio today, and it's Paul's songs people mention when thinking of the Beatles. He simply wrote the better songs and is proof that you don't need to write complicated lyrics in order to captivate the right feelings in a song (Yesterday, Let It Be). I'd really like to see him live again just one more time but chances are getting smaller and smaller every year.

Salaam Aleikum,
Sebastiaan

Not a big fan of Lennon? I generally favour his songs over McCartney's, even though I like the majority of both (within the band, of course.) Lennon wrote many songs as a member of The Beatles, that both equal and exceed many of Paul's great songs. Such as:

Help!
Ticket To Ride
Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)
Most of In My Life
Tomorrow Never Knows
Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
A Day In The Life (well, most of it)
I Am The Walrus
Strawberry Fields Forever
All You Need Is Love
Dear Prudence
Hapiness Is A Warm Gun
Yer Blues
Come Together
Don't Let Me Down

And many more great, classic songs. And I'm not even going to go in George. Or, did I misenterprate your post, and you meant you generally just prefer Paul's songs to the others?

1. Paul is my favorite followed by George. Never did like Lennon. He just seemed so out there to me. Ringo is ok.

2. Revolver

3. When I first discovered music for my own, I was interested in mainly ""loud stuff" and couldn't be bothered with ballads. The Beatles didn't have the "loud" material that I liked plus they were an "old band" that my parents liked so that wasn't all that cool. So it wasn't until about 2 years ago when I was able to appreciate some of their music and the stamp they put on the entire industry. To be honest though, I still under-rate them today because I still "don't get" some of their music.

"OK, remember when Paul McCartney wrote the song "Michelle" and then he only wrote the first part, Annie said. And then he gave that part to John Lennon, and he wrote the part that said, "I love you, I love you, I love you." And Annie said that it wouldn't have been the same song without that... and that's why the whole world cried when the Beatles broke up on April 10, 1970."

-- I've always loved this quote, from "I Am Sam," and what better thread say it in?

My favourite was always Lennon, and my favourite album is prolly "Help!" They're just one of those bands that I've loved since birth. Their music was everywhere, even then - TV, radio (used to actually listen to that thing)... newer bands covering them... everywhere! And I fell in love with the melodies they created. Gorgeous melodies.

What about everyone's favourite song? Or top 5, to make it easier - mine's a tie between In My Life and I've Just Seen A Face.
