Thanx for the review! I am still thinking if I should watch it.
Without Schwarzenegger hmmm
I am proud that someone from our small country made such a huge career and he just should be in the film
With the "family viewing" - it's kinda like a trademark you know. It's a household name and commercially it works so they make more money when the get more people, it's clear.

I watched it last night. It's good but not a patch on the first two in my opinion. I don't really see why Christian Bale was chose as John Connor as he didn't get much opportunity to show his acting ability. I know The Terminator films aren't noted for their acting, but i still think it was a missed opportunity.

The story is ok but why would Skynet contain Kyle Reese once they had captured him? Surely killing him would have instantly Terminated John Conner and the core resistance?

I think the idea of a futuristic cyborg in modern day surroundings worked much better than the post apocalyptic settings of Terminator Salvation. I kept getting reminders of Mad Max even though the story lines are nothing alike.

It's still well worth watching and perhaps non fans of the franchise would enjoy it more. I love The Terminator and it's sequel so was hoping for something hugely superior than T3 in this latest installment. It is better but not significantly. I'd give it 7/10.

I find it bemusing how editors of films in general see fit to leave in a few quite graphic scenes and omit the odd bit of swearing here and there in order to get a 12A certificate. Swearing is all part and parcel of what makes a film's script believable IMO and emphasises anger or desperation when used well.

It works both ways though cos if you look at some of the films that are being released as 18-rated at the moment, some of them are just plain disgusting and would never have seen the light of day 20 years ago. Look at 'Hostel' or the new one that's just coming out called 'Last House on the Left'. I admit that I have not seen either (nor do I want to) and I know everyone has different tastes but I just cannot understand who would enjoy going to watch 90mins of people cutting other people up as the central theme to a movie.

Terminator Salvation gets the balance of violence weighted a little towards the safe side but everything else about the film does enough to rescue it.
Last House On The Left is actually a remake itself - of an old Wes Craven movie. The original was very brutal, but it was kinda' the point of it.

I wouldn't say in that movie it's gratuitious as such - like it is in Hostel - as the point of the story is this gang hurt and kill the family's daughter so much that they then need to take appropriate revenge on them. But yeah, the original's a pretty disturbing film.

I can't see the remake having that same level to be honest.

### May contain spoilers ###

The first half is awesome, the second half rather so-so.

Pros
+ the title sequence and the first 2018 scenes are stunning, great camera, sound and CG work
+ plenty new ideas as it is the first post-apocalyptic film of the franchise
+ outdoor action sequences are huge
+ great cast, Bale almost looks like the guy in that short scene in T2
+ many details and references to the old films (Arnie, John's scar, Sarah's photo etc.)
+ basically a good plot

Cons
- no Terminator film should ever be rated PG13, never
- Sam Worthington is the main character when he should not be
- how did they create a hybrid after 2003 when 2018's T-600 looks like Jason of Friday 13th?
- 2nd half jumps from idea to idea creating a lot of plot holes, the initially good story appears flat and not thought through
- CG work is getting worse
- uninspired and lame showdown with lots of problems:
- why don't they kill Kyle Reese?
- T-800 prototype in 2018? no "evolution" until 2029 when the first is sent back?
- Skynet isn't defending itself at all? Connor basically fights that one T-800?
- the hostiles just get picked up outside Skynet like kids after school?

T3 is not a classic as T1 and T2, but it was much more thought through than this new installment.

They've gone from great character development, interaction and plot in the first two films, to relying solely on CGI and explosions in this last one. Terminator and Alien were great Cameron movies turned into a PG-13 crapass franchise. This would have worked better if it was a little bit darker like the first movie was.

Terminator finally came to my small local 76 seater cinema I didnt go on opening night (last night (Fri), just incase I couldnt get a seat....

2nd night showing there were at least 10 of us lol ... so not much of atmosphere, most had opted for the transformer film !!!!!!

I am a big terminator fan.... T2 being my favourite and still remains so after tonight.

I like the links in Salvation to the old Terminator films... and seeing Arnie, you could tell it wasnt real but who cares..it worked...

Overall it was a good film , good cast, Bale was believable even though he looked like David Beckham , especially in the last scene. There was lots of action which made me jump a few times. I was very impressed with machines sequences.

Only thing I found confusing was Kyle Reese character, it just didnt make sense to me, but maybe its not meant to until the next one !

The thing I miss the most from T3 and now Salvation is the humour that the first 2 films had.

Dawn

I did quite enjoy it, but it seemed a bit confused about what it wanted to be. Did it want to be a war film, a Terminator film, a Matrix film, or a futuristic version of Pinocchio? Did it want to have John Connor as the main character, or Marcus Wright? Did it or did it not want to show the post-Judgment Day world as the previous films displayed it?

Let me follow up on that last point a bit .... the whole film seemed to function just as a transitionary step between the original trilogy and a forthcoming film series. It didn't show Judgment Day, and it didn't show the post apocalyptic world which we had seen in the previous films (which was clearly a place where the series had to go eventually, and is what everyone actually wants to see) .... it just showed something between the two. I just couldn't help but feel that this wasn't a particularly important enough chapter in the Terminator mythos to actually warrant a film (if such a thing makes sense, seeing as the films create the mythos, but I know what I mean).

I did think the post-apocalyptic feel was well done, but let's face it ... when we heard there was going to be a Terminator film set after Judgment Day, we all envisioned it as being blue tinted, dark, and with lasers, didn't we?

Plus, I'm not the biggest fan of war films, so I'll admit, the first half dragged a little for me.

Also, the plot holes were so wide you could drive a bus through them. Can someone explain to me just how in 2003 anyone knew that 15 years in the future, a robot/human hybrid would be needed in order to destroy John Connor, who no one had ever heard of by that point?

Heh, all of that sounds incredibly negative. But I do have to admit, the set pieces and effects were fantastic, the acting was generally believable (although Bale did have a tendency to overdo his voice, a la Batman), the post apocalyptic atmosphere was well captured, the action sequences were impressive, and the Marcus Wright plotline added an extra dimension to what would have otherwise been a very straightfoward story. Overall I'd probably give it somewhere around the region of 7 out of 10

Oh, and when the T-800 came out, I couldn't help but grin. Ditto when You Could Be Mine was playing on the radio

Those were the highlights of the movie for me. I left absolutely disappointed. From the reviews on the internet I knew it wouldn't be a great movie, but I was shocked that it was this bad. You summed it up pretty well, it didn't know what it wanted to be, and it failed at all attempts. It could've been so much better, but it's the worst of the Terminator movies. T2 and T3 had the ultimate feeling of being followed all the time. This one didn't. When the movie was finished (with that horrible ending) I wasn't excited at all. Really one of the most disappointing blockbusters I've ever seen.

Salaam Aleikum,
Sebastiaan
