I think both are poor albums.
But 'What About Now' wins (the first 6 tracks anyway, the second half is bollocks).

I found Aftermath to be incredibly disappointing. I think I was hoping Richie would really break from the shackles and really let loose, but instead we get dull middle of the road rock-by-numbers, awful ballads and plenty of lyrical nonsense. Oh, and 'Sugar Daddy', worst Jovi-related track ever? It's certainly up there.
I really don't understand what he was trying to achieve with this mess of a record.

I saw him at Shepherds Bush and was left feeling equally as let down. He's not the guitarist he once was, and the material was equally as dull live as it was on record. What most surprised me was how the set-list, much like Bon Jovi, neglected massive parts of his back catalogue. It felt like this was his chance to break free and remind us what he's got - instead we got 'Who Says You Can't Go Home'. GOD DAMN IT.

I'm going of on a tangent, but I found the whole Aftermath campaign really depressing, and it really made me appreciate Jon a whole lot more!!

Aftermath is the clear winner.

I like 'Aftermath' better: It's emotional, raw, soulful and the lyrical content seems more honest to me.

Yes, it is uneven ("Stranger" remains my favorite Richie solo album; it just 'flows" so well imo)--but I'd take imperfection and guts in 'Aftermath' over polish and the sameness of so much on 'WAN".

Also, in interviews about 'WAN" both Jon and Richie have stressed the positive messaging. Positivity is fine but when it becomes a 'gimmick' I find that less-than-sincere. Mix it up; none of us is upbeat 100 percent of the time. A greater range of emotions would allow for more depth to the music.

Also, I tend to prefer blues-rock to country-rock or pop-rock as a genre, so I gravitate toward Richie solo music on a stylistic basis.

What About now wins for me. Richie is not the singer he used to be (I know I know neither is Jon) and it clearly shows on the Aftermath album. The songs are badly produced and while there are a few that I like more than any song on 'What About now' it feels uneven and lazy. What many call having balls to leave extended jams at the end of his songs, I call it being lazy to actually sit down and plan out a structured solo that flows. But all we got was rehashed licks he's been playing for the last 10 years. What About Now is no Rock record, but it's not pretending to be either and there's just more songs I like that ones I dislike....

Easily Aftermath for me. Didn't like it too much, but it grew on me, especially after getting really goosebumps when Richie poured all his heart into the songs in Munich and into You Can Only Get So High. Listened to it on my to work today (whereas I had What About Now on yesterday) and it felt so much better. Not in terms of production, but it sounds honest and from the heart and there's at least more creativity and musicianship to be heard.

Aftermath for sure.

From the objective point of view, "Aftermath" is a much more coherent album coming from a musician of over 50 years of age.

It's the major virtue of the album that should have been adopted by the band since Crush.

Aftermath, without a doubt.

You see, I like rock n' roll, not pop. Richie's album is a rock n' roll album, with blues and soul. While WAN is a generic pop-rock album. Plus, Richie's album has guitar, and a lot of it. Plus, his voice is still strong, much stronger than Jon's today.

And, not every song is positive and uplifting. Sure, those songs can help people in times of need, but it's becoming a gimmick with BJ. There's a bonus track for Lost Highway called "Lonely," which I feel is the best song of the album because reminds me of their older stuff. Not everything has to be about "getting off your knees."

I feel Richie's music has more soul and emotion in it. That's why I like Aftermath better, because every song is a rock song, even the only single. There's a wide range of influences and styles, while WAN is pretty much a generic pop-rock album. And they've been releasing generic pop-rock albums since Crush, so there's nothing really new.

What About Now, without a doubt. Aftermath of the Lowdown is one of the most overrated records among Bon Jovi fans.

Who over rated it? it's got a pretty muted response here.

It's average but still beats WAN.
