Default 'Breakout'

I'm obsessed with this song right now. I always loved it, but revisiting early early Bon Jovi recently has convinced me this is by far and away the best song of the two debut albums.

The lyrics are cheesy of course, but the guitar riff and the keyboard at the forefront really come together well and it has a really rocking vibe to it. The way Jon sings 'better off on my own' is fantastic and I love the breakdown between the second chorus and the solo.

Live it's great too. Obivously they never were going to, but I would have really enjoyed to see them dust this one off a few times, especially when they started playing the likes of 'Only Lonely' and 'Roulette' etc. in 2010. The 'woah-oh-oh-oh's would work well too to get people into the song who most likely wouldn't have a clue what it was.

What do you think of 'Breakout'?

It's an okay song, but its heaviness sounds rather... like it's trying a bit too hard to not just be a pop tune. Hence, it gets in the way of the melody. Super typical early to mid 80s popmetal; like the stuff Kiss were doing at the time. Far from being my fav from the first two albums.

The melody is ok, the thing that I really like in this song are the whoaa's and Jon's boyish voice that he used to have back then.

But I never listen to any tracks from the first album, the only exception being Get Ready. IMO the second album has far better songs than the first one but I don't even listen to those too often either. Silent Night is a track that I really enjoy, especially the live version from 87 Cincinnati.

I think the first two albums are vastly under-rated. Ask most people on this board and BJ and 7800 will feature in most people's bottom three albums. I'd say on each album there is a great core group of songs.

Bon Jovi - Runaway, Burning For Love, Breakout, Get Ready, Shot Through The Heart

7800 - Tokyo Road, Hardest Part Is The Night, Price Of Love, Silent Night, Only Lonely

The first two albums are awesome! Jon's voice in itself is enough for maximum enjoyment. They are like the Slippery Demos to me because I didn't really hear those songs until the New Jersey time frame... Slippery made me fan, New Jersey made me a bigger fan, and the Blaze album turned me into a diehard... I went back to the first two albums between Blaze and Jersey...

Great song. One of the best in the debut.

It's okay.

I don't mind the first two albums but I prefer Jons 'mature' voice 1987 onwards. Bit too squeaky and high on a lot of songs, for me.
