I've wondering the same for years now. Just found this thread. Are you sure that it is a coffee cup? Maybe it's a beer mug? Has the band ever said something about it?

Maybe I'm just too literal - but here in Jersey we have diners (as in the cover photo) and those diners always serve a "cup of joe" anytime of day or night. It never occurred to me that it was anything else but a cup of coffee.
