Default Def Leppard & BJ have the same release date...

There's a big hoopla goin on about this on the DL message board, saying how it's the labels idea to try and male them compete with each other because they somehow share the same market.
but If you think about it, both bands are pretty friendly, so it's not like they're having a war for post 80's rock territory, but I just wanted to know you guyss take on this.
Do you really think it's the labels idea to have them go up against each other.
Do you think this will affect either band?
I think it's pretty safe to say that BJ will sell more records because DL's release s a covers album, and they pretty much are not selling that well lately.

So what do you think?

not that I'm looking forward to Def Leppard to flop, but I don't think their music is similar to Bon Jovi's current music....maybe some of the stuff from the early 80's, but not now. I hope Bon Jovi's new CD gets some respect from the critics.

def and jovi had the same (or quite the same) released date since 1992

adrenalize - keep the faith
vault - crossroad (both compilation)
slang - these days
euphoria - crush
x - bounce

apart from few records these ones has bean released within few months one from the other

I think they still are quite similar, there are at least a dozen of songs (in the last 2 records) that both band could write

I probably won't be buying the new Def Leppard album, it really doesn't appeal to me. Maybe in a few weeks time, if I've heard some stuff that I like I'll give it a go. I can't see it out selling Have A Nice Day to be honest.

I don't dislike Def Lep at all, but they lost their appeal to me when I bought Adrenalized. With it and all it's predecessors, their sound didn't change enough for me to maintain interest. I don't think that it's a big deal. If the labels are doing it intentionally, they're stupid. Neither act is going to sell a million out of the box that week and, if it taps into the same market, it's only going to hurt both of their sales. But... I don't really think the market base is that close. It was in 1989, but things have changed.

Def Leppard fans have got a massive complex about Bon Jovi. They some how think that Jovi owe Leppard something because they came along after them with a similar style (at least to start with). And because Jovi have managed to stay successful longer and are on the same label they think it's down to favouritsm from the record label instead of facing the fact that BJ have managed to evolve and Leppard still sound exactly the same.

exactly........Bon Jovi HAS evolved and Def Leppard really has not. Look at their total number of sales also. Bon Jovi has outsold them by a HUGE margin.

I really blame the Alrenalize album for Def Leppards status today. Sure it it sold by the truckload back then and was probably considered cutting-edge in 1992, but it didn't have any longetivity as apposed to Hysteria. They didnt change their sound or even appearence either by 1992. (What band in their right mind would still have big hair and and tight trousers and sing "Make Love Like A Man" the following year after the grundge movement. )

Then by 1996 when they released Slang, no one were in interested in, in their mind, a bunch of 80's hair band has-bins, nor did they buy into its more up-to-date experimental approach. Though fans of theirs consider it their best work since Hysteria.

Euphoria was a decent album IMO and it was quite brave of them to release a modern-day-80's-rock album in 1999, and then X was OK but a little to watered down for a band who created Pyromania and Hysteria.

I don't think Bon Jovi owe an awful lot to Def Leppard, maybe in the early days, but certainly not anymore.

Having said, IMO Slang, Euphoria and X crap all over Crush, Bounce and TLFR.
