Solo albums aren't there to 'bridge the gap'.
Personally, I found Undiscovered Soul a bit too middle of the road for my liking and I don't think the stuff on it was as brave as Destination Anywhere.

Why not, DA & US clearly were a mid-step into the new sound that was on crush (new sound compared to TD)

They're not there to bridge the gap, no, but they do tend to show the development from one band album to the next

Thank you. I'm not saying it bridges the gap as a band album but it certainly makes it clearer. You give a new fan TD and then Crush, it just does NOT make sense how the style switched so much but you throw in what they were doing in the middle and you can sort of see a transparent changing, perhaps.

Destination anywhere is STILL one of my favourite albums. The more I listened to it the more I liked it. It is so different from the BJ albums that I think alot of people just wrote it off. They were expecting something and JBJ delivered the opposite which I think is exactly what he wanted to do. Brave is a very good description.

I don't think I agree. Jon put it best, Crush wasn't a band record, it was a Jon AND a Jon and Richie album. So much of Crush was written without Richie and I think it shows.

But on the other hand, that sound that Richie had on US is there. It's tough to say what was richie's influence and what was already there from Sex Sells. We'll never know, obviously. I really hope more songs leak from that project.

Exactly!!! Solo albums have nothing to do with band albums. They aren't done for bridging gaps. They are done to express themselves musically outside the Bon Jovi box. Band albums and solo albums are completely different animals.

I do though love Undiscovered Soul its a great Richie album and really showcases what Richie without Bon Jovi is about. Destination Anywhere is an absolute masterpiece. I really think it was something different from Jon. I for one found it to be a great album. Probably my favourite album bar none.

There's some truth behind it but when I think of songs like Save The World or Just Older - they would've fitted much better on US than on DA, nevertheless, they were written by Jon or by Jon and Falcon. When you consider then Two Story Town for example- I think it was written by Jon and Richie although I can't remember for sure - it sounds much more like something that would pop up on DA. I wouldn't say that US closes the gap, though. I don't really think US closes any gap or offers any explanation. Crush is an avergare album because the music is mediocre. It's not a problem of somber of fun. It's just a bunch of crappy crappy songs - most of which Jon has written on his own - I've Got The Girl, Save The World, She's a Mystery. Some of them were co-written by, Sambo - Thank You For Lovng Me.

The big difference to US is that, although quite poppy,US has QUALITY, whereas Crush simply hasn't.

Agree completely.

Although personally, I cannot really even draw any similarities between the solo projects and Crush. Somebody said that Just Older and Save the World would fit better on US - how exactly?

There's no way either of those, or any songs off Crush for that matter, would fit on US at all. I haven't actually listened to DA for years so I only vaguely recall it being naff. Consequently, whether songs off Crush would fit on DA or not, I can't really say but there's simply no way they'd fit on US.

Crush is complete pop whereas US is mellow, bluesy material, not as rocky as Stranger in this Town but nothing like Crush.
