I always thought that was about Jon. Apparently I'm very perceptive.

Good thing they don't play it any more, I bet it'd be weird to sing a love song about yourself.

And Tico did say, "I love you Jon, band" at the 1996 Christmas show in Jersey when he sang.

I thought it was kind of funny, like, "I love you Jon... oh, and the rest of you too."

I don't see it as being written about just a friend. Its written about someone he desperately loves.. but can't be with for some reason. He is saying that he will be there forever for them but he is not or can't for many reason love them. He is convincing himself with the lines " I ain't gonna love you" and the last line goes down a notch to almost an admission because he does actually love them. Its brings to my mind a scene where you are telling someone you don't love them and as they walk away you whisper " I love you"

Eh, I just assume the "letter to a friend" of the title is meant to imply he's singing to a friend. And "I ain't gonna love you/Cause I love you" would signify the unwillingness to mess up the friendship by changing the kind of love it is.

Yeah its friend because thats all they can be. Yes your right the friendship cant become love for some reason whether it be married or unrequited or male/male lol or whatever. He doesn't want to ruin this friendship by doing anything wrong because ultimately he does love them.
