Basicly the "turn up the sound" from the mastermix (the one that the band and the producer make) by compressing the signal (not 100% sure).
They do this to make it sound louder, so it will "sound better" on radio etc.
What we get is a product which is louder in dB, more bass etc, but looses a lot of detalils.
Compare any KTF song too any HAND song and you'll get it.
Don't change the soundlevel and try it with a headset. For best result play the cd, not the mp3
Hope that helps.

EDIT: I tell you what, for all you none believers! Compare Two Story Town with Misunderstood. It's the same producer (Luke Ebbin, JBJ, RS), it's 3 years between them. Which sounds best?

For the record, I read an article in Rolling Stone about this months ago, so It's NOT just a Wiki thing.

Aloha !

It's what happens with many artists lately, and many, many McCartney fans complained about it on his latest album Memory Almost Full. Many songs are really good but sound so chopped that they lose all their charm and the instruments lose their depth.

Salaam Aleikum,
Sebastiaan

Exactly! Thank And thank you Crushgen24/88 (sorry dunno so many realnames).
So my question is: Do you think HAND is a victim because of this war?

Just listen to Nirvana's Nevermind album compared to KTF (released about the same time).
Though both albums are overproduced as hell, way too much, you still get a picture about the compressing and what is being ment.
I can't explain it much other then the comparising between Faith & Nevermind with Nevermind being the better produced album, tho still being overproduced (like KTF hence the comparising). All this shit started around late 80's start 90's. Just listen to non-remasterd albums from early 80's late 80's, meaning production ment for CD's, so digital. They are all overproduced, better comparising, Crush vs These Days as These Days also being overproduced and different produced (Hey God vs SFTP) yet Crush being compressed a lot more, listen to the different instuments (as my guitar vs 100 years, with 100 years being terrible compressed, just listen to the solo). And the thing is, it's not even called 'terrible' these days, its normal.... its shit... I like live recordings more on different artist then studio albums as the studio albums sounds way to fake nowadays.

To anyone who is a musician new records sound like crap. There is no dynamic range at all. When I first got a CD player and a few cds in the early 80s (I know - I know - I'm ancient), one of the things that delighted me about favorite recordings that were transferred to CD was the awesome dynamic range.

There were favorite piano concertos that I never heard some details of in worn vinyl recordings. All of a sudden - there they were - and the contrast sounded gorgeous. Yes there were a lot of early CDs that were harsh and recorded improperly - but the industry was going in the correct direction.

These days - bah. That video says it all. And it has been going on since the mid-nineties that I know of.

Nonetheless, it is a good idea to highlight the problem - maybe someone will pay attention.

It's good to see people agree with me
Thanks for the link!
Next 100 Years must be the worst produced song ever in Jovi history!
I'll 100% agree with TD2005 (sorry 'bout name again...) it sound fake.
Comparing a vinyl too a cd, is like... *put in your favourite metaphor*

Let's have good sound back. And please release all Jovi albums on vinyl!!!

Next 100 Years was shocking - but to be fair, you'd be hard pushed to find many people who have any idea what dynamic range might be, or to find that many that have ever questioned an album's production, to the point that they find it annoying to listen to. We are but a few, remember.

I would agree, Bounce and HAND are chopped to buggery - but unless I was listening to classical or deeply layered and textured music, I'd find it hard to give two hoots.

And please, don't look back to vinyl. If you'll allow me a metaphor; a modern plane experience is awful, but you'd take it over a week-long trip on a zephyr, no?
