It's a difficult choice- it's the only song on Bounce with a proper solo and is decent enough musically, but the lyrical content is just cheese.

1. The references to Butch and Sundance are shit, as are all the other names like Oldsmobile, Jimmy Cagney and St. Christopher. They are pointless details that add nothing but are there just for the sake of trying to make it sound like a detailed story.
2. The build up is the same as the one for The Beatles' Let It Be, so the music is just another one of Jon's attempts to create something out of something that already existed.
3. You never get interested in Ricky and his four kids who are hungry. And if they've got money for smokes and a six pack they should be able to buy food as well. In other words; the story doesn't make any sense at all. Rick comes of as a tosser who smokes and drinks while his kids are crying because they're hungry. How am I supposed to like Rick now? He's a cunt.
4. It's chorus is too long and the verses are boring.
5. It's a long story without a beginning or an ending. You don't know anything about Rick when it starts and you don't know what happens to him when the song is finished. This might be an attempt from Jon to let the listener fill in the blanks, but in the end I still don't give a **** about anyone in the story.

Like I said, it's Jon trying to be Bob Dylan and Elton John but failing miserably. And the live performances of the song with Jon doing the acting on stage are awful as well. On the Bounce Tour it only worked because of the video's on the screens. Had they not showed them, the song would've tanked, just like Joey does nowadays.

So that's mostly why the song is so shit.

Salaam Aleikum,
Sebastiaan
You look too far into a song! Why can't you just listen to it and say whether you like it?

Clearly because Seb is the smartest human being alive, so when he forms his arrogant opinion of what's "shit" and what's not, no one could possibly disagree with him...

It's one of my favorite songs I play it all the time. The reference to Jimmy Cagney and Butch and Sundance are absolutely relevant to the story. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, of course...

I don't really look too far in a song, this is what I get from a first or second listen. It's what I always do when listening to a song. And with things like a chorus being too long and all that stuff it's not that hard to hear why the song is shit. And tell me, if you disagree with me, why do you think that this storyline in the song is great? Rick is a cunt.

The guy said he couldn't see what was so wrong with it and I replied by giving him 5 reasons why.

Goatie, I feel very sorry about your tiny penis. It must be completely out of proportion with the rest of your huge body.

Ouch!

I like the song, I think it's fun. Yes, Ricky is a cunt, he's a tool. Just get a job, right.

But as a drama I like it. It's fun, like old time gangster stuff to which the references to Cagney, Butch & Sundance etc. are pointing. Plus it's easy to see it's Jon rewriting Bruce's Meeting Across The River so I like it because of the "fan-trying-to-compete-with-the-master"-aspect as well. Nice to see how Jon does that.

What can I say, I'm a sucker for good drama. FWIW there are plenty of poor starving people who end up spending what they do have on smokes and booze. Irresponsible yes; illogical to us perhaps; but I think it just numbs the pain.

The allusions are all part of the fantasy. Better to tell yourself you're a cowboy, a martyr, a Robin Hood of sorts -- rather than a hopeless wonder who ****ed up his life. It becomes a downward spiral.

Story is supposed to be a bit open-ended but it's not that hard to fill the gaps. This was their last stand.

I love the music too but I will admit I'm pretty easy to please when it comes to keys.

I don't think there was really need for that comment Seb but let's move on...

I don't see why everybody hates the story as you're probably meant to make your own story out of it.

Personally I don't care I just think it's a great song.

There wasn't any need for Goatie's reply either.
