For someone who has, for the past 3 years, lived on a student loan of <£3.5k it sounds like a lot lol

The student loan works out a bit more if you live away from home, but since I live so close to Liverpool it wasn't worth moving there, plus I wouldn't have got that extra anyway because of living so close now.

Hopefully this year on my placement I'll be able to get enough and save it such that I won't need a loan at all for my final year, though I'll still be £10k+ in debt when I finish my degree. Fortunately for me the new rules don't apply since I already had started my course, as anyone starting this year has to pay their fees, so if that was the case I'd end up leaving £15k+ in debt when I finish. It will put a lot of people off going and in a few years they'll see that and start giving grants again and such.

£3.5k sounds like a lot :P! That's over €5000 right? My student loan's like €2800... and I live away. I can't even pay my monthly rent of that, let alone my food and necessary expenses. If I still lived home, it would even be less than €1000 . Studying is an expensive way of life...

For living at home the maximum student loan is around £3,500 and is paid in 3 installments through the year. Thos who live away from home and have to pay rent can get more, though I'm not sure how much more.

Hopefully I won't need a loan the next 2 years though as I'll be working the first and shall try to save such that I won't need a loan the final year.

As for your kids Russ I have no idea, presumably it will be another 8-15 years before they are old enough anyway so perhaps by then it will have changed and you can get a grant again or something.
