I actually did, as my son wanted one.

We might still go for it, but not until he is older and can actually take a big part in the 'upkeep' of a snake terrarium.

is there a big problem with pet-overpopulation where you live?

No, it's much more regulated than in France, so you can actually walk the streets without walking into dog sh*te. One of the little things I don't miss about my homeland... And you don't see that many dogs here, and even fewer cats...

Is it a problem in Seattle?

there is a huge problem in the US as a whole. More so in the rural, less educated, more backwards areas as the south. But still, it is a big problem up here as well - animal control picks up all the stray dogs, but they will have to be killed - slowly - in gas chambers as many shelters just don't have the money to euthanize them humanely.

I volunteer for a cat and dog rescue group and it makes me sick how many people just go out and buy a puppy at a petstore because it is cute and then dump it because vet care is too expensive or they move and don't care to bring the pet along. I've taken in numerous senior dogs (for the rescue group to then adopt out) that have been dumped because they were old and not so cute anymore, only for the family to go out and get another puppy.

My Molly was on death row at age 9 - nobody wanted her because she is a big black dog - though with the sweetest temperament. She was pulled on her last day and I adopted her from the rescue group that pulled her.

Makes me sick and I could go ballistic over it.

People also don't bother to spay/neuter their pets, so there is always an abundance of unwanted litters of dogs and cats.

I call it a huge problem when you have to put down baby dogs and cats because nobody wants them.

Did you grow up with animals?

We had a black labrador when I was a kid in South Africa, but we had to leave her behind when we left for Scotland because of the stupid laws in the UK about bringing in pets. She would have had to stay 6 months in quarantine when she as healthy as can be. So we let her go to a farmer who had a great lemon tree plantation, I think she had a happy life.
Writing this is making me realize that she must be dead now, sad feeling.

Do you think all sorts of pets make sense?

no - I think it is completely stupid to keep birds - it is torture.

Most exotic pets, I think is ridiculous - including most snakes, lizards and that sort.

Unless you can provide a habitat that is like their own with enough room, I don't think the animal should be kept as a pet.

Do you think the consumerism of our society is contributing to animal cruelty?

I killed a bird when I was a kid - we were looking after it while its owner was on vacation it wasn't particularly 'accidentally' but I didn't mean to kill it either - I still feel guilty about it

you?
