According to JS interview with Johnny from the Goo Goo Dolls, HE was the one who said to write a Bon Jovi song when JBJ wanted to do quasi-country. The guy's a producer, not a dictator. He does what JBJ (or "the band" - yeah, right) ask him to do. Hell, Shanks did "Who Would You Die For". That sounds like something from Destination Aynwhere. He can do that sound, too.
Of course, if JBJ ever got so far out of his comfort zone to actually use a different producer, he's probably be in a different headspace altogether. As it is, he wants Shanks to do what we get. I have 0% doubt that JBJ is calling the final shots.

Yeah that's something I've been saying the last few years but listening to that podcast kind of humanized Shanks. He has an ego, sure, but him prancing around on stage is him playing rock star the same way Jon shakes his hips and Richie mugs. You do it to be entertaining.
We're in the endgame with the band, they're not going to fire Shanks. Love or hate the guy, he's keeping the band alive right now.
