I don't think it's "Shank's Trickery"... He's not the guy working on Jon's vocals... Some stuff might get drowned out with his over production style but Shanks is the Independent Producer. He's just putting the puzzle together and filling in the empty pieces while Jon's relaxing in the Hampton's.

I'm not 100% sure how Jon does it but my guess is, he sings the entire song straight through and then goes back and does overdubs singing lines or maybe even individual words to hit certain notes.

Most fans are familiar with that little overdub snippet of IML. Where Jon adds in the "Yeah Yeah Yeah It's My Life..." The Yeahs were obviously edited out of the final cut but I think Jon did that to help hit those notes... It's like a runner getting a few steps in before he crosses the start line verses the one starting from a still position..

Crush was recorded with analog equipment in Jon's studio however, now with digital recordings, cleaning vocals is even easier than ever. Look how they clean all those live tracks were... Combine that with multiple studio takes, overdubs, and over produced music...

Considering the amount of time Jon spends in the studio, I'd say Jon sings each song a few times all the way through live. They edit the best parts together... He probably goes back later on to do some overdubs and that's it... The rest is cleaned using technology. Jon could probably do his part, 20 songs, in a week.

Crush was recorded digitally to pro-tools, I don't believe it was recorded completely analog. I think studio trickery was still possible back then but Jon's voice didn't need it. Even then his studio voice didn't sound a LOT like his live voice but it was still pretty natural sounding.

I believe John IS the guy working on Jon's vocals. There's been multiple engineers across the Shanks album and the result is the same (with varying degrees of success and some real big flubs).

What can we deduce from this?

That PhilX knows, like the rest of us, that a potentially great song can, and usually will, end up having the life and soul mixed out of it.

Possibly.

There’s no question Jon will sound better in the studio. He can take his time and redo any/all words as required. He should be relatively relaxed too which most definitely helps vocally. Then, Shanks and Co can add their sprinkling of effects, use double tracking, add backing vocals (which personally I don’t think they do enough of nowadays) and generally make his vocal weaknesses less exposed.

At this point, I just want some interesting songs and some decent guitar parts.

Surely to God even Jon realises they are not attracting a new audience anymore so they can do away with chasing the next big hit. Surely.....

I think he has realized that by now, but he also knows what his core audience is these days and that he can throw pretty much anything at it and get a good cheer for it. Unforunately...

I wholeheartedly agree with you on that for the most part - but if you really think performances like these three aren't even bearable, I don't know what is for you:

https://youtu.be/g_ZJsUsaVpM

https://youtu.be/dBXSmtaTpfY

And yes, I'm 100% sure that somebody like Seb will come and say "that Bed Of Roses is just a terrible shout-fest, him being able to hit the notes doesn't mean he's singing them - also, Phil's playing doesn't have the feeling this song requires", "Saturday Night is only somewhat decent for the ad-libs during the breakdown, the normal parts sound absolutely dreadful" and "Always is simply awful, he's straining his balls off to belt out the last chorus like in the past but the range just isn't there anymore".

That said, I - and many others - surprisingly enjoyed these performances a lot more than usual in the last 5-6 years, and that makes them definitely above par nowadays.
