I don't think it's Jon's fault and I don't think it's the fans fault I think it falls somewhere in the middle. I've always thought Jon felt slighted when These Days and Destination Anywhere, two of the more "personal writing" style records tanked in America. Next thing you know they're doing a comeback album, the return of the talk box, the return of Bruce Fairbairn, severely dumbed down lyrics. I think that spooked him into releasing what he wants.
I think he's putting out what he thinks (and is probably right) the casual fan wants. For as much as we knock the current sound it sometimes does sound like a modified version of the 80's with the stacks of harmonies and echo-y drums, it's just severely lacking the guitar parts.

I feel he's always been caught between his artistic leanings with his obvious acceptance of commercialism. Whatever we think about it, he has chosen to be commercial over being artisitc. Sometimes, the two have blended and sometimes successfully, but I do think Jon makes a choice.
Perhaps there is a debate about why he makes that choice as a lot of Jon's more intimate interviews suggest he feels heavily obligated to numerous people (including the fans) to keep Bon Jovi as big as possible. Of course, he also clearly has a massive ego about those achievements and is unwilling to give them up.
Still, he could write a whole album of those acoustic-style songs and it could tank and still not change anything for him. He chooses not to do it, for me the only question is why he makes that choice.
