Hmmm...

I read the comments that others have posted about the songs so I caved in and listened to the snippets. Underwhelmed. Hopefully that will change after listening to the full songs. I don't think I'll be buying this though - first one that I won't have. There's good in every album, but I'm struggling to find it here.

When was actually the last time the album hadn't leaked less than 3 days to its release? Lost Highway (though that one was a tough call since some contest winners in Italy got their copies about a week prior IIRC)?

I remember when jovi nearly split in 90 sambora gave interiew in RAW mag about the stranger album saying when a solo artist he could actually do a solo more than a seconds long.
I think on KTF he was allowed to do more but then over the albums they got less and less.

Interesting! Even from an artistic standpoint These Days had a lot of AMAZING solos. In my mind 2000 was the real turning point but didn't realize Richie talked about it publicly as early as 1991/1992.

I think you hit the nail on the head; and it makes even more sense when the quote is read within the context of the paragraph:

Quote:
....It’s also OK to finally refer to Bon Jovi individually and not necessarily as a band. Guitarist and co-writer Richie Sambora has been gone for nearly a decade, taking most of the band’s rock fuel with him. At least that’s the way it sounds in 2020 … or on 2020.

It's more than just rock guitar that left with Richie. As said, Bon Jovi has never been hard rock. At most, they were melodic or pop rock; but they seemed to have more rock band attitude with Richie, especially in the live shows. It could be argued that Phil-X has even more of a hard rock edge than Richie; but he isn't out front as much. Richie sharing the front line on stage and in interviews, to say nothing of his backing vocals, created at least the illusion of a rock band. Even though, technically, it's always been JBJ and his backup band, Richie's presence made it a lot less obvious than it is now.

This is said beautifully.

Thanks, sir! I've been trying to figure what it was about that quote that stopped me cold when I first read it yesterday. It finally clicked when I read James_86's post.
