I actually had forgotten that the title Shine had been around during the WAN era, but my thoughts had been "this one sounds sonically a lot like WAN" when listening to the song today!

Very well possible that it was the track from back then that just didn't fit/get used for whatever reason.
There's countless possibilities:
- Shanks suggested Jon to revisit this one (similar to how Always came back to light) since he had been working with him back then already
- Jon simply didn't see it fitting in 2013 and pulled it out for this one, like Diamond Ring that needed three albums to make the final cut
- Jon dropped it at the time, but regretted it later (like he was unhappy with some tracks on KTF literally weeks after the release) and gave it another go
- 23 tracks in Nashville doesn't mean the current band didn't record one Jon had previously written, it could've been in the batch

You know what....yup. Didn't even consider that.

I just listened to Room At The End Of The World as a companion. Some vocal parts are obvious while others are difficult to tell. Even in 2103, Jon carried a higher vocal tone.

I feel it was recorded in between. Maybe one of the first recordings sessions and they only had Jon record certain parts.

Anyone else want to give it a shot?

Good god, I wonder what Jon would sound like in 2103

I've also given it some thought and, of course it's all theory and speculation (but that's what we're here for) this is how I can imagine it:
We're in 2012. They've recorded Shine, they've recorded Room At The End Of The World. For some reason (maybe even the mood of the day the tracklist got finalized), Room gets picked for the album. That one song lost out due to another similar one having been better and I'm pretty sure Jon was once said that about two songs somewhere.
They move on. Tour, turmoil and so on...
We're in 2014/15. Jon's big fight with the record company about the last album they're forced to deliver in the contract. So, while simultaneously recording stuff for THINFS, they revisit their archives of the past ten years for possible leftovers. Shine comes to light again. But Jon likes it too much to "waste" it on the brown paperbag album he is dreading.
It's back on his radar, but it doesn't fit THINFS. From his talking and his point of view WAN topically was much closer to 2020 than to THINFS where he had worked off his personal demons.
They come to 2020 and Jon sees that this song might fight this time around while he is in the writing process. So they either took it back to the studio and re-record it or they had been recording it a version without Richie during the BB/THINFS sessions already and it gets back on the album.
The pandemie hits, Jon re-writes the record and it's knocked off to bonus track status again. Shine is the kid on the playground who's only allowed to play when teams are uneven and has to make way once better players arrive...

I can see this situation. Especially BB sessions.

I think this is stated perfectly. I bet you're 100% correct that it was brought out during Burning Bridges.

My mind went completely blank on my last post. I totally forgot about BB and THINFS between WAN and 2020... Senior Moment.

So yes! When I said it was recorded in the middle, BB makes perfect sense. He's not as high as he is on WAN and not as raspy as he is today.

I find it weird at 3:19 (it makes me laugh).
The voice at the beginning of the Do What You Can video is also funny... >_< jaja.

The deluxe edition was just released ("Released October 5, 2020") on streaming services (Spotify, YT music, iTunes, whatever), which includes Do What You Can with Jennifer Nettles, Shine and Luv Can.

This makes no sense from a marketing perspective. Sounds like a last-minute decision.
