I'm not jumping on that bandwagon complaining about Jon's performance. That's the way he does it for most shows in the last 5 years. With and without audience.

But what caught me was this:

A young Jon, even up to the early 2000s, would have never ever allowed himself to deliver a performance like this. He's been notorious for being Mr. Perfect. So that's the thing I find rather concerning. It wasn't a live broadcast but a recording. Everytime he realizes his performance sucks, he could've stopped and start over once again until he got it right.
Remember their acoustic show in Yokohama 2003? It was with an audience and they played a couple of songs twice to make it right. And finally skipped the whole idea because he wasn't satisfied with the result.
It's this change in attitude for which he has to take the blame.

That constant twitching of his right eye during the choruses of Blood In The Water (as already seen in Rio last year) made me cringe...

What the hell is wrong with the poor man?

Yeah, I've been wondering about this a lot in recent times as well. Seems like Jon has pretty much thrown his perfectionist attitude out of the window by now.

Yes, exactly this. Saved me to type anything to respond to previous posts, thanks

The point is that I keep waiting for Jon the performer to return and he's gotten worse and worse. He's just not there anymore and haven't since there was that slight improvement at the end of the first leg of the THINFS tour.

It pains me to see Jon like this. I barely recognized him.

I don't think he plays more guitar parts live. I truly believe he played all those parts in the studio as well. Which makes sense, because his style much more matches Richies/BJ style than what Phil X does. Who fits the bill perfectly for the parts he did, as well (the solo in Beautiful Drug or the riff in Brothers In Arms).

Oh sure. It surprises me though I get the why, he offers the natural evolution of an already established sound whereas Phil needs to be restricted to a few crazy things here and there. He should be let loose more frequently and see what happens but Jon wants what he wants, that's fine.
I don't have a bone to pick with Shanks in all honesty, I just thought Phil will be more utilized live, that's where he can shine, regardless of his style clashing with modern BJ.

Edit: I stand corrected, BITW solo is Shanks so I'll save my critique of Phil's style not being 'emotional' enough for when he butchers my favorites solos

I'm pretty sure you didn't see Jon the performer turn up at full force in cities like Rio, Sao Paulo, Sydney and Dublin during the last couple of years... not that it made his vocals any better, obviously, but the man was really energetic and IMO sold those shows

While I don't more or less disagree, you're cherry-picking pre-pandemic logic. There's crew costs, quarantine time, rehearsals, production costs for an album that's already out with very little possible ways of promoting it. You can't just scrap that. I have a hunch his dissatisfaction of his performance is why it took so long to edit, this was filmed how long ago?

If Yokohama didn't come out it wouldn't really matter, they were on tour and it's on to the next promo. Logically you're right, the old Jon would have done it until it looked better but personally I'm giving the guy a pass on this one. If he came out saying how great his voice was and it was one of his best vocal performances I'd be pissed as hell.

Does anybody know the recording date of the show? It was in August and the day after their iHeart recording.
I prefer labeling such events with the real date and the air/release one.

I'm not talking about repeating the recording day after day after day. And what I'm saying has nothing to do with the pandemic at all.
At the very moment of performing you got a feeling if it's right or not. That's what he did for decades. And that's what I was trying to say with the Yokohama example. Right after they played certain songs Jon knew it wasn't good in his opinion. So they played it again.
And that's what they could have done with this performance, too. Instead he tells people afterwards that he knows he could be better.

I don't know if you misunderstood me or I don't understand you.
But I don't get your point concerning "crew costs, quarantine time, rehearsals, production costs for an album that's already out with very little possible ways of promoting it." Because all of it has no influence on doing it right.
