I don't think OWN was supposed to signify any kind of anniversary other than the 1 year anniversary of having a massive hit song.

It was their first live album, and they took advantage of 15 years live, to make a compilation of different times. It was released with the intention of boosting ticket sales.

It was an unusual anniversary, I know, , but it coincided with that date, they even bothered to re-collect different decades.

84 - 01 is 17 years. I think it's fair to say they didn't do anything for the 15 year anniversary (1999) because they were working on Sex Sells/Crush.

Technically true, but the compilation shows live tracks from 1985 to 2000. 15 years.

If we take it that strictly, then NJ's anniversary wasn't correct either, since it should have happened in 2013.

New Jersey's release had been planned for 2013 until Jon came up with What About Now which lead the record company to delay it for another year.

So if they had taken only tracks from 1990 - 2000 it would have been a 10 year anniversary?
Sorry, but with this you see an anniversary where there is none.

As I said before in the case of the NJ Deluxe Edition, I think Jon and the company had a plan to celebrate the 30th anniversary with extended editions of the most popular albums from his discography, starting with NJ. So that was it. I remember there was even an announcement that there would be more to come.

It's a shame SWW and NJ didn't do a Deluxe Edition anniversary in 2006 and 2008. The songs would probably have been mastered by George Marino instead of Obie.

As I said before, the band released it at an opportune moment along with the OWN Tour. It's not exact, but I even read about it back then, that it was a way to celebrate all those years of touring, and show people that they always had a good reputation live. Maybe the word anniversary is not exact, but come on, you know what I mean, it was a way to release a Greatest Hits live.

Speaking of the NJ deluxe edition…

This has of course been already discussed to death on this forum, sorry for repeating obvious facts, yet I need to point this out once again:

I just don’t get why they ended up releasing something that is far from a real anniversary celebration of the album. I mean, there’s so many missed opportunities here. Hell, they even had Rosie sung by Jon, the awesome BTBMB demo (the one with slightly different lyrics and the harmonica outro), the magnificent IBTFY demo… the list goes on and on.

I just don’t understand. I never will. The deluxe package could have been the greatest thing they’ve ever released (or actually ANYONE has ever released). And yet we got something sub par, leaving out so many gems. Seems like there’s been only minimal effort put into the whole project.

I’m still kind of keeping the hope alive to get some of those aforementioned tracks finally on the new box set. Wishful thinking?

It surely was done half-heartedly, but the BTBMB and IBTFY versions you can find on hAnD90's channel most likely weren't in the band's hands from what I know. It had been a promo tape reel that had been mixed in Vancouver in the spring of 1988 and most likely was never archived, but got lost. Same reason why "In America" is known by some fans, but I don't think the band had that mixed copy in their vaults anymore.
