Sorry, I don't have the time to trawl through a million interview trying to find it, Jackie may have a link to it. I would have read it in a link from here, cos this is pretty much the only place I come across stuff like that. I have no idea what it was from though, so I have zero chance of finding it.

I have no doubt that Richie's alcohol issues played a part in the whole thing, but I think that there is way more to it than that, much of which we will never know...I don't see any of them being the sort to write a tell all book one day...

Oh he actually did say "joined at the hip".

I'm not sure it would make sense to Richie to come back at any point. Jon clearly wants to continue to make records in the same way they have for the past few years, for however many records that he has left in him, and Richie doesn't seem to have any interest in that. With Jon's declining vocals their best shows are behind them, and I'm sure Richie is having more fun doing what he's doing. I doubt either of them need the pay check.

However, it would be nice if they could just get together and reconnect again one day, on a personal level if nothing else, whether he rejoins the band or not. They've shared so much together and they were still an amazing team back in the day...I think it's a real shame that it would finish like this...

It was sometime after he apparently decided that he needed to start downplaying Richie's previous contributions to the band. I can't say, for sure, exactly when Jon actually said it; but Billboard posted it on the day THINFS was released.

(*Note of confession: I did add the word "joined" for clarity, because it's what usually precedes "at the hip" in common parlance.)

Oh, and btw, if you're interested, the byline belongs to the author of the new (authorized) book about the album. Just in case you're concerned about his credibility.

RW: ...Depicting a stately manor with deep roots descending into the earth, that image became the cover of This House Is Not For Sale, the beloved New Jersey rock band’s 14th studio album, out today (Nov. 4) on Island Records...

JBJ: ... But, writing-wise, absolutely not, I wouldn’t know how to do that. This is just what I do, these are the songs I write.

[NB: For the record, some of the songs Jon is referring to are actually songs that he CO-wrote. But since I doubt that Jon would ever try to claim sole credit for songs he wrote with others, he probably just assumed, as the majority of writers would, that most people - at least those who weren't looking for reasons to be pissed off with him - would understand what he meant.]

JBJ: But this was more of a band record than I have made over the last three or four [records]. What I mean by that was the guys were in the room the whole time. Some songs, from the notebook to the studio floor, took on a different life because of the band, where on the previous three records that would not have been the case. The record-making process changed with this album."

RW: Maybe it was time for that in the history of this band.

JBJ: I think circumstance led to it. These are a lot of beautiful accidents. Richie did participate in the record-making [in the past], but it was always me and Shanks at the hip, and then Richie second to that, and then [keyboardist] David [Bryan] and [drummer] Tico [Torres]. David really filled that void left by Richie and took on a whole different leadership role in the studio, and it was a welcome addition, And then you couldn’t help but have Tico be just as involved. It was happenstance, it just worked out.

...

RDK, the very first time I ever posted in this forum I got my ass chewed out for misquoting Jon. By one f'n word. Later I was accused of "making shit up" just because I put quotes around something to indicate that Jon might have said something similar, in what was clearly a hypothetical situation. Do you really think I'd dare to quote him anymore, even indirectly, without double-checking it first?

If so, you need to think again, my friend.

For David to have "taken over " the "leadership role" Richie had in the band, there would have to be leadership responsibilities to take over. I'm don't commit exact quotes to memory (or dig them up a year later), but The Circle was celebrated at the time by those involved as the most "Jon And Richie" album in decades.

Even Richie has said he is not as much of a voice in the writing as Jon because Jon is the one singing the songs. Richie himself has said that they have to be from Jon's POV.

Look at his own style of record making. He has literally been working on something for years with stuff "coming soon." If he doesn't have driven people like Jon and John surrounding him, he doesn't complete stuff. You know, lile that country tinged album he was going to release with the likes of Kenny Chesney and Jo D. Messina....

I agree with Matt that anything denying drugs as a problem was a cover up. For goodness sake, so many people who have seen him solo since talk about what a mess he is. The few clips I have watched have ranged from pathetic to embarrassing.

Matt have proved himself wrong on so many occasions that any credibility that he had went out of the window ages ago, as far as I'm concerned.

No one is denying that he has sobriety issues, so I'm not quite sure what's getting you so hot under the collar? Is it because we are saying that Jon re-writes history to suit him? Because they all have done that, too numerous times to mention...

I'm not talking about Matt Bongiovi. I mean Matt the moderator who posted a few posts back. Also, I'm not "hot under the collar." Just presenting the different side of things. I'm content with how things are.
